I am not familiar with max contract rules, but are you saying that all-stars can get a higher max than other players? What a weird rule.

If voted an All star starter twice, he can get an extension off his rookie deal at 30% of the cap instead of 25%. Which at the time is going to be the difference between say 27m and 33m or so starting salaries.

You sure that's after a rookie deal? Thought that was for third contracts

Another interesting question looking ahead is that Embiid is available for an extension this summer.

Would you extend him then or wait until he hits rfa so you see a 2nd year of basketball (and health) and get to keep most of the cap room (his hold might be 10m less than his contract)? I feel like I know what the answer will be on here.

I'm quite sure. It was called the Rose rule when they implemented it:

The salary in the first year of an extension to a rookie scale contract (other than for a team's Designated Player) may be any amount up to the player's maximum. This is usually the 0-6 year maximum, which is based on 25% of the salary cap (see question number 16). However, a player may receive up to the 7-9 year maximum, which is based on 30% of the cap, if he meets any of the following criteria (called the "5th Year 30% Max criteria"):

Named to the All-NBA First, Second or Third team at least twice
Voted as a starter in the All-Star game at least twice
Named the NBA Most Valuable Player at least once
The salary in the first year of an extension to a rookie scale contract for a team's Designated Player must be the player's maximum salary. If the player has also met the 5th Year 30% Max criteria, the player's salary may be any amount between the 0-6 year maximum and the 7-9 year maximum.

if he can get significant more if you wait one more year and we stay put on our situation (no big trades, no big fa) then yeah, sign him earlier. if not, it makes no sense at all to extend him early

Embiid is going to play against Charlotte tomorrow, won't play against the Wizards on Saturday, however.

Well that is an easy one. You wait until he plays another year of hopefully healthy basketball. If he does, then he is the definition of a max player.

Coaches and players are almost assuredly going to vote for Kevin Love, but I want this. Lol.

I'm okay with it not happening. Besides the extra cap room it means, I think it will just motivate Joel further. And he will be there for the Embiid + others guys JV game.

That said, I'm still voting for Joel. Embiid embiggens us all.

Meant I want the fan vote, at least, even though I don't expect him to get voted for by coaches and players.

Yeah even if he passes Love in fan voting the coaches and players won't start rookie Embiid on the 76ers over Love.

Will you stop worrying about him being paid more. Omg. And even if he's not voted in as a starter he will be on the all Star Team so it's a moot point. The east still needs Centers. Embiid is only competing with Drummond and Whiteside. They will probably take at least 2 Centers. Embiid will be one of them which will disappoint you.

Seems you don't follow the rule or the posts explaining it. He doesn't get more money if not a starter and I won't be disappointed if he makes the team. Making it as a reserve would be pretty ideal.

Now carry on with your real outrage.

Is the voting still just for the starters? Who picks the rest of the teams?

Fan voting only accounts for 50% of the vote in choosing the starters; media and players decide the other 50%.

Coaches/staff still decide bench.
