This is the best news in the off season for the Jays. There was no one else available that wasn't a substantial downgrade.

Pretty okay with this. The price won't be terrible and we got our pick from letting Edwin walk. Still work to do....

Not done yet...

JAN. 16: Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that the two sides have discussed multiple iterations of a deal but are currently focused on a one-year pact (Twitter links). A deal isn’t quite done yet, but each side is optimistic that something will be completed.

Heyman says they are looking at a too-year deal. I suspect it might be a one-year full guarantee and a second year partial or vesting salary.

Rosenthal is saying they are working on a two year deal, something in the $35-40m range

$40 million for an aging player like Bautista?

That's a bit too much don't you think? It's not my money anyways.

That works out to $20M a year. A healthy Joey Bats is probably gonna put up 3 WAR. The average cost of 1 WAR is $8M, so it makes sense.

Maybe but they seem to have painted themselves in to a corner from a PR perspective and what's left on the market. It's only two years at most so hopefully JB can stay healthy and produce.

Beggars can't be choosers, I suppose... I'm still not sure which side is which in this case

2/$35M is reasonable but I think on the high end. Bautista has very little leverage and I imagine 1/$15M is possible if we want to wait it out. Without the draft pick loss I suppose 1/$20M is reasonable for next year too, valuing him as a 2.5WAR player, although I'd prefer the one year deal. Could be options involved too, I guess.

I imagine that giving up the draft pick is the bigger stumbling block for other teams, not the money/term
