The Players Vote - SHAMEFUL

Post#1 » by HurricaneKid » Fri Jan 20, 2017 9:45 pm

The players vote was SHAMEFUL. It appears that out of 450 players about ~323 of them voted. And MANY that voted didn't take it remotely seriously. The WC backcourt is pretty top heavy and I really discount any vote outside of Curry/Harden/CP3 and Westbrook. Yet only 391 of the ~646 votes (900 possible votes) went to them.

The players weren't picking backups. They were voting for two Western Conf backcourt starters.

Yet these guys got votes from players TO START THE ASG:
Bryn Forbes
Tyler Ennis (2!)
Malik Beasley (2!)
Ian Clark
Calderon (2!)
John Lucas III
Quincy Pondexter
Pierre Jackson
Huertas
And a TON of other undeserving players.

I mean there was an outcry that the two time reigning MVP made the ASG yet we hear crickets when THESE votes are cast. I didn't even know some of these guys were IN the western conference (and some of them AREN'T EVEN ON ROSTERS).

Less than 35% the NBA players voted for two of Curry/Harden/Westbrook/CP3.

Its one thing for a fan to vote for a player on their team, or a guy they met that was really nice to them. Its another for the players to put their friends on the ballot when they were so undeserving. So next year lets remove the players altogether and give their portion to GMs/Coaches. Or SOMETHING ELSE. To me, this REALLY impacted my feelings on the player awards too. Because if you are throwing your college buddy an AS vote, you are probably throwing him an MVP vote too. And there is simply no validity to these votes.

People need to stop taking the All-Star game so seriously.

Based on the reporting regarding the players' votes, the fans did a better job. McGee got multiple votes and he backs up ZaZa.

Players and fan vote sucks. Media lost all of their credibility last season with the Harden thing. Who can we turn to to trust

Lighten up, it's a joke of a game anyway which nobody takes remotely seriously anymore, who cares.

The fan vote is shameful as well. But we already knew that.

Having been around quite a bit of youth basketball via reffing for a few decades one thing I noticed was that many of the better players didn't follow the sport much and didn't have much of an historical background on the game of basketball.

The better players had other things on their minds. When you're a top high school/AAU player you have a lot of things given to you and people tend to put those players on pedestals where they receive a lot of attention from admiring fans.

Basically, and this is a generalization for sure, when you're good enough to make the NBA you have so much going on around you that you don't take time to closely follow the game like your average realgm board member and thus many don't care or know enough about other players.

Here is the list of players that received votes:
http://official.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2017/01/2017-All-Star-Starters-Player-Voting-Results.pdf

11 Lakers received votes to start the ASG from players. Think about that. A NUMBER of players said the equivalent of "should I vote for Westbrook, Harden, or Marcelo Huertas". "Huertas it is".

As long as people are voting, there will be a problem. Then if we move to some sort of formula (think BCS), people will complain that there isn't enough "eye test" involved.

There is no perfect system. Luckily it's pretty meaningless.

Interestingly the starters all turned out pretty well despite the crazy fan voting and player voting. I guess the system worked.

They should use fan vote to narrow the players ballot and they select from there, not any player in the league.

Who the hell voted for Tyler Ennis besides Tyler Ennis

I think the NHL hacked the vote.

Which is why people need to chill.

We use all star starts and games when looking at HOF status and I believe making it still effects the $$$ people can make, though that might've been changed in the new CBA

NBA should do as the FIFA does with the World player of the year voting and release the names of each player and his votes.

Well, not exactly. More like, 11 Lakers saw their name on the ballot and opted for themselves. And some players said, "you pick me, I'll pick you". And many more still just didn't pick what so ever.

Between the level of play and general disregard of earning a voting choice, I'm not sure what else the players can do to hammer home how meaningless the All Star Game is to them. We shouldn't care either.

Do you think maybe the players that voted were doing so with some strategy in mind. IE " I want Steph Curry to be an all-star starter, so it's stupid of me to vote for Curry and Westbrook, So I'll just vote for Curry and my boy Tyler Ennis?

I could see Rondo doing something like this. Nobody else.

I remember when i used to stay awake to watch the all star game (I am French)

Now the most interresting part of the week end is the 3 pt and dunk contest.

It is a shame it used to a good game
