Starting Lineup Until Russell Returns

Post#1 » by WVlakerfan » Mon Jan 23, 2017 7:25 pm

Really did not like the starting lineup against the Mavericks. Personally i would like to use this time to move Clarkson to the 1 and see if he can get back to what he was doing as a Rookie. Worst case scenario he stinks up the place and the Tank keeps moving. so my ideal starters in this period of time with D'angelo out are:
Clarkson
Ingram
Deng
Randle
Mosgov

Additional Alternative lineup i have wanted to see (after Russels Return)edit*:
D'Lo
Clarkson
Ingram
Deng
Mozgov

I'd go

Clarkson - Young - Deng - Nance - Randle.

Second unit:

Calderon - Lou - Ingram - Black - Mozgov/Zubacca

Not sure JC has had enough reps initiating the offense and calling plays. It'd prolly just be mostly pick n roll. If JC starts at PG then i'd want BI to start as well.

At this point just start Ingram and Ivica.

Marcelo
Jose
Young
Deng
Mozgov

I think this Line up could be quite effective for a certain goal.

Id like to give Jordan a chance at pg again. I actually think he can be a lot better than we think. He has played the position fairly well in the past. We might have asked him to be a scorer this year but let's give him a chance. One thing he will do that Russell doesn't is play hard. He may play stupid at times but he always plays hard.

J Clarkson 2015- 2017 186 120 28.7 5.4 12.3 .441 1.1 3.4 .339 4.3 8.9 .480 .488 2.0 2.4 .808 1.0 2.5 3.4 2.7 1.1 0.1 1.7 2.0 14.0

D Russell 2016 2017 114 82 27.7 5.0 12.2 .405 1.7 4.9 .349 3.2 7.3 .444 .476 1.9 2.5 .747 0.6 2.9 3.5 3.6 1.2 0.2 2.5 1.9 13.5

Chart got all messed up. But it's nuts that these players are not much different. Maybe that is our issue. When Jordan wants to pass he can pass. When Jordan wants to score he can score. When Jordan wants to play defense he is affective. Give Jordan a chance at pg!

PG: Jose Calderon [15]/ Jordan Clarkson [33]/
SG: Nick Young [26]/ Lou Williams [22]/
SF: Brandon Ingram [30]/ Luol Deng [18]/
PF: Julius Randle [25]/ Nance [16]/ Deng [7]/
C: Ivica Zubac [16]/ Tarik Black [25]/ Randle [7]

When Nance is fully healthy and off a minutes restriction, have him eat into Black and Zubac's minutes a tad to get him to 25 minutes.

I'd put Calderon in there. He is a good shooter and knows how to run an offense. Defensively he's useless but that won't be a huge drop off.

I'd only let the injury affect one unit. Keep the second unit in tact and just swap in Calderon for Russell.

Not sure if this is thread worthy but here goes.

Ideally, your starting five should be the most competitive and consistent so that you can establish a rhythm and your second stringers are just there so that your starters can rest. In our case, our best 5 are coming from the bench. What was Luke's rationale with this again? Is it to push our starters to be competitive and try to get a huge advantage against the opposing bench or he really sees the starting five to be his best lineup?

Bottom line is you can't expect to be successful if you have your bench outperform your starters. You can't just hope that you'll always win the catch up game. As some mentioned already, this type of rotation is just rewarding players who aren't playing well. This doesn't seem to be a good strategy to develop your young players.

With Russell and Randle expected back Tuesday, what does everyone think the minutes should look like going forward?

I was against it a month ago, but I'm totally for it now. All the radio talk and podcasts have convinced me. Trade Lou Williams and/or Nick Young. I would rather keep Young than Williams, but I could be convinced otherwise.

Assuming the roster stays the same through the season, here's my rotation.

PG: D'Angelo Russell [25]/ Clarkson [18]/ Ingram [5]
SG: Nick Young [24]/ Clarkson [15]/ Russell [9]
SF: Brandon Ingram [26]/ Luol Deng [22]/
PF: Julius Randle [23]/ Larry Nance [25]
C: Ivica Zubac [25]/ Tarik Black [15]/ Randle [8]

Russell, Randle, Clarkson, Ingram all over 30 minutes. Nance and Zubac 25 each. I don't want to see Mozgov ever again.

This is what we've done with the exception of Randle and Nance. Zubac has been in there in the last 2. Nance and Randle don't offer much scoring in the set offense and Zubac is the closest thing we have to a defensive presence inside.
