I can see it happening but there are enough vets around the team that may be able to carry the load while the rookies adjust during that period before they get back on track before the playoffs. At the end of the day, it seems like a no-lose situation for the Leafs regardless of what happens the remainder of the season.

There are no vets on this team. All the vets have been a part of every Leaf late season collapse or the one year we made the playoffs and **** our pants in the 3rd period of game 7, unless Matt Martin and Matt Hunwick are the kinds of guys you're talking about.

Even Komorov has only been in the league 4 years.

By vets I mean more of the experienced players. Sure they've been part of collapses but they've also been carried this year by the rookies that guys like JVR, Bozack, Kadri could help carry the offensive load a bit during a downturn in production by Matthews and Marner.

I'm not saying for sure it happens but they haven't been so heavily relied on like those teams of the past that there is an opportunity for them to step up here and hopefully the rooks recapture their legs and produce towards the end of the season.

I'm happy to lose a few spots if it's to try and mature the teAm

Yeah, going down the stretch in a playoff race will be good experience for these guys.

Didnt think they would be this good this year, but im happy to see it.

I don't even like the suggestion of rushing to trade JVR or Bozak any more. They are now slotting in to roles that sufficiently support the young guys and if they carry the load it's a great mix of players. JVR especially, hard to find big PF types like him that can score too.

If you're legit looking to build this in to a contender, what are the key remaining weaknesses. We obviously need a top end defensemen, someone probably that slots in as top 2. A Weber type vet would be great for this young core.

Thing is, theres young guys that are gonna be due for raises in the coming years. Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Brown, Zaitsev, Kap (potentially). All seem like they're gonna get healthy raises, of course anything can happen in a couple years tho.

Locking a guy like JVR up to a 6 or 7 years for 6.5-7 million dollars just doesnt seem smart. JVR is good, but we should have enough top 6 forwards. Forwards doesnt seem like a position that we're lacking in. Id rather trade JVR in the offseason and look to get a defenseman, either with the assets we get for him or for him straight up.

I think JVR should be gone in the offseason, unless the team falls off a cliff and we end up out of the race by the deadline.

Nobody is suggesting re-up JVR for huge money like that but there shouldn't be some rush to move him either. And with guys like Marner and Nylander we're relatively small up front, having a guy like JVR would be good. Obviously if the price is that high you can't sign him but if it's a reasonable deal he's not a bad guy to keep around. And with the other contracts you've got Kadri signed up on a very good deal, you can let Bozak go or re-sign him cheaper too hopefully so maybe it's not as bad but they will have to be very smart managing the cap going forward.

Well that was quite an entertaining game! To bad we/the Leafs could not pull out the win in the end. Ah well.

On another note, Nazem Kadri has been great for us this season. He's played extremely well defensively, and is finding the back of the net. I think he's been one of the best players for the Leafs so far.

Yup, Kadri has really put in a career year. I'm skeptical of all the Selke talk, I think it's just Toronto media crap, but he's definitely busting his *** out there.

Also, Zaitsev is a #1 pairing guy. Lock him up long-term, please.

I've always believed in Kadri. The problem with the Leafs at that time was you'd get these top picks like Kadri or Schenn and they'd be the only propect in the cupboard, thrown on the big team and expectations for a superstar are too much. Now that we've got a lot around Kadri, he's settling back in to a role. Part of it was his own maturity and working with Babcock but because you have a lot of skilled folks around, it's not all on Kadri to breakthrough and be a star.
