Giles is going to drop out of the 1st round because of his past injuries. He's torn his acl twice and doesn't have that freakish athletiscm that made him so coveted. I'd take a chance on him because of his extreme potential but I doubt we pick him up. Once agents get a hold of him he won't be practicing for teams outside of the lottery.

Back on the court in mid-December after a year-long absence because of a second torn ACL that caused him to miss his high school senior season, Giles is struggling to find his rhythm. Through nine games, he’s averaging five points and five rebounds in 13 minutes, shooting 50 percent from the field and 39 percent from the free-throw line. He also has looked a step slow defensively when he’s been asked to step outside of the paint.

Giles’ quickness and explosiveness just aren’t there and with his average awareness and lack of offensive polish, there just isn’t a lot to be excited about at this stage, especially considering how much Duke has struggled with him on the floor. The direction of the NBA game would seem to render him strictly as a center, and his inability to protect the rim or adequately defend the pick and roll makes him somewhat of a tough sell until his offense comes around.

Giles’ athleticism and tremendous motor were his biggest selling points in high school, but NBA scouts have yet to see anything close to his best yet

If he's torn an acl twice then he really doesn't have much potential does he? He's probably done. I'd rather grab John Collins as a late first round pick for a power forward. Highest PER of anyone ranked in DX mock draft.
Knee injuries mean you're basically done, or will never be nearly as athletic as you once were. Just watch D Rose now compared to when he entered the league. Ligaments suck at healing and Giles will not be a freak athlete again.
There are other high ceiling guys who could be had without the severe bust potential.

Guys, I don't see how this is not a lottery level talent. DX has him in the 40's, which seems ridiculous. His only problem is previous weight issues. But he plays almost exactly like Zbo. Imagine the hype he'd get if he had signed with Kentucky or Duke (who both gave him offers).

7'4" wingspan with a 9'0" standing reach, only 19 years old (20 by the draft)

18.8 PPG / 12.7 RPG / 2.8 APG / 56% FG / 50% on 3's (2 att) / 79% FT (6 att)

I don't know man if his weight is an issue now what will it look like 5 years from now not to mention alot of his points are coming from abusing smaller players in the post I'd like to see how some of those moves translate in the NBA (highly unlikely). Plus in one of the highlights you can hear the announcer saying how winded he got chasing the smaller gaurds.

So far the negatives are

He isn't athletic
He isn't quick
He's a defensive liabilty
His weight is/was an issue (picture of him before he lost the weight)
Spoiler:

He probably could carve himself out as a Jared Sullinger type of player but with how deep this draft is I don't know why you would want to take him on with all of those red flags and thats his bench mark. Their stats are eerily similar.

That's a good comparison. I guess ZBo can be the high end, Sully can be the mid-range, and maybe someone like Oliver Miller can be the low-range.

He lost a lot of weight though, and showed a strong work ethic going back to school and improving a ton after bombing the combine last year.

He's a bit longer than Sully though, which will give him an advantage. I still think Swanigan would be a nice fit with a team like ours because he's a big body who can get buckets in the paint, while also stretching the floor. But I can also see why there are sexier picks.

The lack of athleticism is the major issue. We don't really have the kind of defensive presence inside to mask other player's defensive weaknesses. That's why I wouldn't be averse to a guy like Jonathan Jeanne who looks like a potentially tremendous shot blocker, although he may not be any more than that and we already have Bebe as a shot blocker who can't rebound.

One thing I love about Swanigan is how he used to weigh 400lbs as a 8th grader lmao like how is that possible?

Seriously tho, for him to get himself into shape to NBA potential player level from 400lbs 8th grader shows he has great work ethic imo That's a great quality to have. You know he's willing to put in the work as he's already shown it.

I agree and I have no concerns at all with his weight. The question is what is the likelihood of a big with a lack of athleticism finding a role as a regular rotation player in the league these days? I can't see Masai drafting a slow big when he's seen how difficult it is to incorporate them in the lineup. His outside shooting makes him an easy enough fit offensively for a lot of teams, but he's going to get abused defensively at the next level.

One thing that I like about him is he thinks the game well. Fat guys usually always do. They have to think a few steps ahead because they're always a few steps behind. He's a very good passing big because of this as well. Great quality to have in a 5 imo

I haven't watched him enough but I don't always assume slow big= JV on Defence. Because he has range and can pass the ball I think a hyperbolic comp but maybe possible ceiling is Gasol or on a lower end Bogut. I'll be the 1st to say the slow 7 footer is dead, but you can't write them all off. The ones that are intelligent defenders and know where to be have a place. imo Bogut getting injured in the finals last year was the reason the Warriors lost. I haven't watched him enough on D, though, to see if he has that potential.

The last guy with a profile like this was Jimmy Butler, who just also happened to be ridiculously underrated as well...

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/18523734/purdue-caleb-swanigan-overcoming-obesity-homelessness-become-big-nba-prospect

Throughout his youth, he floated between unstable housing situations and homeless shelters, back and forth between Indianapolis and Utah, as his mother, Tanya, tried to stabilize her life with six children, all while his father, Carl Swanigan Sr., wrestled with a crack-cocaine addiction.

Swanigan inherited two key features from his biological father—height and a tendency to obesity. The elder Swanigan, who died in 2014 from complications of diabetes, was 6'8" (2.03 m) and weighed nearly 500 pounds (230 kg) at his death. By the time Swanigan was entering eighth grade, he was 6'2" (1.88 m) and neared 400 pounds (180 kg). His weight issues, according to Medcalf, were also a symptom of his unstable home situation. His father had many brushes with the law, battled drug addiction for most of his adult life, and physically assaulted his wife. According to a story in Bleacher Report, he was accidentally dropped by his mother as an infant, leaving a bruise on his face; this incident led her to move with her children to Salt Lake City. For the next decade, the family bounced between Indianapolis and Utah; he recalled that he lived in five different homeless shelters and attended 13 different schools by the time he was 13.

When his mother decided to move the family to Houston, his older brother Carl Jr., concerned that Caleb would keep gaining weight if he moved with his mother, called his former AAU basketball coach, Roosevelt Barnes, a former three-sport star at Purdue who played on the school's 1980 Final Four team and now a successful sports agent. Barnes, living in Fort Wayne, Indiana, agreed to take Caleb in if he could adopt him and raise him as his own son. Barnes addressed Swanigan's eating habits and, after receiving clearance from a cardiologist, began putting him through workouts similar to those Barnes himself went through in college. By the time Swanigan finished high school, he had slimmed down to 260 pounds.

Kind of off base though to mention an athletic shooting guard in a comparison to a slow footed big.

Bogut was a pretty fantastic player in college. Went 1st overall for very clear reasons, namely his defense, passing and rebounding. Also won a lot of accolades including AP player of the year. Can we be a little more reasonable when comparing prospects around here? Swanigan is going to be a second round pick and we're now talking about him in the same breath as a first overall pick and defensive anchor.

How exactly is comparing their life stories off base?

...not even sure what their athleticism has to do with anything I posted.

He's an interesting stretch 4/5.

The last guy with a profile like this was Jimmy Butler, who just also happened to be ridiculously underrated as well...

Kind of off base though to mention an athletic shooting guard in a comparison to a slow footed big.

How exactly is comparing their life stories off base?

...not even sure what their athleticism has to do with anything I posted.

Sorry, thought you were trying to suggest his potential was anywhere near Butler, which like any other comparisons I've read, would be totally unrealistic and unfair to the kid. He's likely going to end up a bench player like most guys who lack elite tools(in his case defense and conditioning.)

First time I've even heard of this freshman. 18 year old point guard with outstanding defensive potential.

Looks like he could be the next Payton, Rondo on defense with that length and activity level. He'd be an instant fan favorite.

Holy cow. He led USC to beat UCLA. Ball had 10 assists but 7 turnovers. Melton had 13 points, 9 rebs, 5 asts (0 to's), 4 steals! :o

Next up he faces Washington on Wednesday 11pm EST with another top prospect in Fultz. He'd be great with our late 1st pick.

Trade FVV. Melton can spend a year in the 905 working on his shooting like Powell.

He's from L.A. and went to USC like Derozan. 8-) Maybe Avery Bradley 2.0. His shooting form isn't bad so can improve.

Good call. Next Gary Payton. So he'll be going #1?

Think it has a lot to do with ppl viewing him as a tweener. I don't see it, though. He has the athletic ability to guard to 3 for sure and has the strength to eventually guard the 4 down the road too. He weighs about 230lbs so he's a big guy. One thing that works in Bridges favor for sure is Izzo is known for not being a freshman coach. That's why he usually doesn't get the top top recruits bc he usually sits them a lot freshman year. Bridges just happens to be from Flint. Izzo plays Bridges a lot and I know they're young but still. izzo in the past would give the minutes to a less talented upperclassman

A guy he reminds me a little of is the current high school highlight film Zion Williamson. Speaking of Zion, did anyone see that block? wth dude got shot out of a cannon

I'm no expert on Bridges at all. I haven't seen anything but some highlights of him. But at 6'6 without the handles of a guard, what else can you call him but a tweener? He's the definition of a tweener at that size. There have been successful and even exceptional(Barkley) undersized power forwards before, but most I can think of also had a post game. Bridges scouting report states pretty clearly that he lacks a post game. Again he's not even 19, so he could turn into something very different in the next few years, but at the moment he's clearly a tweener.

Bridges is perfect for today's undersized 4, who can play and defend both 3/4 .. I think we will be lucky if he slides to late 1rd pick ..
