What is the NBA DUI suspension policy?

Post#1 » by benchmobbin02 » Tue Jul 21, 2015 5:04 am

I came here to ask because I thought you guys would have looked it up already. I seem to remember it is pretty leniant. Like 5 games or something? What do you think Lawson will get for 2 Deweys in a few months. 10-15 games?

Great move by Morey. Even if he implodes Morey can just release him with the next yr converted to TO.

I think that it is five games, but I'm not sure.

I have no idea what the punishment might be for a repeat offender. Did he get suspended for any games after the earlier DUI while he was with Denver?

past few years DUI arrest is 1-3 games (Monroe, Wright, Kidd, Tucker, etc)
since this is Lawson 2nd one in 6 months
i don't know if they will make it more serious
i think no more than 5 games
he's sort of rehabbing now
i hope he can serve his suspension while he's rehabbing
(maybe NBA don't count those games as suspended games when you are injured IDK)

It hasn't gone to trial yet so he hasn't been punished for it yet in the league. He had a Dui before he was drafted so that doesn't count.
He had the charges dropped in 2012 + 2013 for driving offenses and domestic incident with GF. So he shouldn't be a repeat offender or in a program yet.

In Denver when he got the Dui this year (January 23rd), he told the cops he had a previous Dui in Missouri. So they charges this a second Dui. He was let out on bond and told not to drink. Then he got the Dui in Cali in July. Doing his month of rehab now and then will have trials for both Jan and July DUIs.

Found this on NBA Drug and DUI policy. Kinda confusing but gives us an idea.
NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION TESTING POLICY
In 1983 the NBA adopted its anti-drug policy. Based on reasonable cause all players are subject to random testing during pre-season with rookies tested three times on a random basis throughout the season. The league works with The National Center for Drug Free Sport to administer tests and transmit the results to the Office of Commissioner David Stern.

PENALTIES -- NBA
First Offense: 5 game suspension and mandatory attendance in the leagues anti-doping program
Second Incidence: 10 game suspension, continued counseling.
Third time: 25 game suspension, continued counseling.
Fourth: Minimum 2 year suspension.

For “drugs of abuse” there are similar penalties.

A DUI conviction or a player's first positive test for marijuana results in mandatory entrance into league's substance abuse program.

Second offense: $25,000 fine and possible suspension.
Third: 5 game suspension without pay.
Fourth: 10 game suspension without pay.

So if we go by this then as long as getting put into the league's substance abuse program doesn't come with a automatic suspension then he is looking at 5 games. He may get more due to them all being so close together but that is all I could find.

Hi
According to ProFootballTalk, a player "deemed legally responsible" for his first DUI offense would be hit with a one-game suspension and a fine of one game check. Under the league's current policy for substance abuse, a first-time offender generally faces a fine of two game checks, but no suspension
