I love our defensive upside. Just look at our roster:
Good Defenders- Wall, Porter, Oubre, Morris
Solid Defenders- Gortat, Smith
Bad Defenders- Beal- Hes not a defensive disaster like Isaiah Thomas or CJ Mccollum, but its not his strong suit
Terrible Defenders- Burke, Nicholson
Wild Card Defenders -Mahinmi- We know hes a good defensive center, but we don't know if he will ever play.
Sato- Need to see more, but he looks promising. Defending smaller quicker guards might be an issue.
McClellan- He's light years better than Burke.

If we could squeeze Burke out of the rotation and get Mahinmi back (let me dream) this team would have close to top 5 defensive potential not unlike when we played Okafor and Nene together a few years back.

In the past, that has been offset by Morris being a pretty lousy help defender, a weak rebounder, and an inefficient shot-happy offensive player. But in the past two months, his help defense and rebounding have improved considerably. He is also taking and making more 3's, but that's more likely just a small sample size fluke.

For what he's being paid, Smith has been a fantastic signing. Scrubs were signed for twice what he got. Nicholson & Mahinmi are obvious disasters.

True - though Smith seems to have more than his share of bonehead plays. Twice last night, he just ran inexplicably straight into defenders earning offensive fouls. Those kind of plays lead to officials not giving him the benefit of the doubt on other plays.

The foul on that break against Delaney wasn't Jason Smith's fault. He changed direction and made the effort to avoid Delaney, Delaney jumped into him and flopped. It was a terrible call.

The Hawks did a ton of flopping last night. Most of them didn't work, and I credit the refs seeing through them. But that one did. Delaney is a huge flopper, he had at least three or four last night.

I don't think Beal is a bad defender. He's about average. I also don't think Oubre is a good defender, at least not yet. He can't handle burly players and he fouls like crazy.

Have to give coach Brooks credit for how he has these guys playing. The Wizards look like the best team in the East right now. Hope they can keep it up. Would be nice to add a piece like Tim Hardaway Jr. or Tyreke Evans to bolster the bench. Hardaway can be had for a 2nd rounder (according to an article i read on espn)

The game last night was a masterpiece besides the turnovers. Wizards need to aim for the number 2 seed to avoid Cleveland until the Eastern Finals.

My memory says Beal has been a pretty solid defender in the postseason. I think he expends a ton of energy on offense running his man thru screens etc, but in the post season with additional rest and higher stakes he's able to up his game on that side as well.
