Chad Mendes scores insane sudden victory in combat sports return

Mendes returned to fighting on Sunday in a grappling match against decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jeff Glover at Submission Underground 3.

The promotion adheres to the Eddie Bravo Invitational Rules, meaning that both fighters duke it out for 10 minutes to try and score the submission. Striking is not permitted.

Neither Mendes nor Glover could force the tap within the time limit, so the bout went to overtime rounds.

After the coin toss, Glover went on the offence first. Starting from the back position, he went to work on the rear-naked choke, forcing a quick tap after just 35 seconds.

Mendes had no time to mull over the finish as it was then his turn to go on the attack. He had to beat Glover's lightning quick finish time in order to win the bout, but pressure creates diamonds. When he was really up against it, Mendes produced a real gem of a finish to force the tap after just eight seconds.

Welp, doing something this weekend that I never thought I'd do before: purchasing a month of UFC fight pass.

My training partner Dan Borovic is competing at the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) this Sunday. He is an absolute freak who is going to be competing against other absolute freaks, so should be entertaining all around in case anyone is free to watch.

Eddie just released the countdown on his youtube page if anyone is interested:

Rodolfo won his second mma bout, improving to 2-0 although it sounds like he had some conditioning issues.

Bruno Malfacine made his mma debut on the same card, winning by armbar in like 90 seconds. This is a guy to look out for, were talking like a 5+ time world champion here in a great division. One of the best p4p jiu jitsu guys on the planet.

Haha sounds like its too late. :D I bought my headgear within a few weeks of starting. I must be really prone to it because I've probably rolled less than 20 times in my life without the headgear and I can feel the cauli in both ears. Thankfully you can't really tell just looking at it.

Dern moving up to 125. We'll see how that goes for her, she looked fat and sloppy the last few times at 115. Hopefully its not a Hendricks thing though where she will miss weight wherever she fights.

ADCC is this weekend. Not sure if I've ever been so pumped for a grappling tournament that I didn't have any teammates competing in. Thinking of shelling out for a month of flograppling just to watch. Hopefully Keenan finally breaks through and takes gold in his division. Too bad Rafa isn't competing.

Which? 88kg? Yea, its insanity. Hoping Keenan wins but Lo seems to own him.

Craig Jones?

Didn't Rumolo DESTROY his foot at Worlds? He's fighting again?

Xande armbarred elite blackbelt from guard using the same techniques he teaches his white belt on their first day. Just crazy. What a competitor.

My god this Craig Jones. Subbing Lo then Santana. I don't even know what to say. Look out Keenan I guess.

Ryan/Danis was really competitive actually, surprised to see Gordon do as well as he did on the feet. Then Ryan just smashed Romulo.

I'd love to see Buchecha put Sanchez on his back and surf on him for awhile. My guess is it would look like a turtle got flipped onto his shell.

Also, adcc has got to be the ruleset that favors AJ more than any other. Wrestling is emphasized, no advantages for the inevitable multiple deep subs he finds himself in every single match, etc.

Cobrinha wins -66kg. Not really a surprise there.
JT Torres wins -77kg.
Gordon Ryan goes through both Xande and Keenan today to win -88kg...might be one of the most impressive paths to victory I've seen in any weight class in any tournament.
Yuri Simoes wins -99kg.
Marcus Almeida wins +99kg

Gordon Ryan though...absolutely filthy. Might be on par with Braulio's performance from 2009 (still my fav competitor of all time).
