Fwiw, Harris doesn't qualify yet but I doubt he is in the positives.

This is sad and funny at the same time.

Sorry but when they do not even tell you how they calculate the stat and the only thing they tell you is deflections are a part of their calculations than I would take their rankings with a big grain of salt, and that they do not use shooting percentage allowed than that tells me it is based on things like steals, blocks, and deflections which is not an accurate reflextion of defense. It is also heavily dependant on system used, Karl's system with guys playing the passing lanes would automatically be considered better defenders because his system led to more deflections and steals.

There is no question that this whole team sucks on defense, and that it starts with our backcourt but I am less worried about deflections than I am the way they let their guys waltz into the lane when they want. I am still waiting to figure out when our defensive head coach comes up with a workable defensive system and gets the player to actually start playing defense.

My biggest pet peeve on this stat is they don't count how many times your guy blows by you for an easy layup or to have to be picked up by someone else (so he gets the easy assist). Or how many times you are rubbed off on a pick so someone else has to pickup your man. That's fine if you pickup theirs, but many teams, including the Nuggets, have their smalls follow over the top of the pick leaving the big having to cover a driving small and his own man - same result as above.

Defense is a very difficult thing to discover statistically - for an individual. For a team, it's pretty easy.
The eye-test is absolutely required for defense IMO.

Yes, Denver is a bad defensive team, we all know that, but Denver also have an elite offense, that alone should win you plenty of games, you can't correct defense in a single season. Many teams in the league are bad on both ends. At least Denver is very good in something and can build from there :)

Mike Malone introduced to Denver as a "Defensive oriented coach"

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-ap-source-michael-malone-agrees-to-coach-nuggets-2015jun15-story.html
"Malone is a no-nonsense, defensive-minded coach, not exactly the fast-paced tactician many expected them to go after to capitalize on the mile-high altitude."

In every major sports league in America there is a saying similar to, "Offense puts people in the stands but defense wins championships" and another says "Offense runs hot-and-cold but defense can be consistent".

The issue is that the Nuggets defense has gotten progressivly worse under a coach that is supposed to be a defensive coach.

I guess Malone need some players that are defense oriented, at least one lock down defender , player like that could inspire rest of the team :)

Nah, he likes Gallinari & Nelson. Adding a defensive-oriented player would disrupt the offense of this defensive-minded coach. :banghead:

He benched Nurkic who has been our best defender for years due to his offensive problems, he jerks around Chandler's minutes and role who is also a very good defender when engaged, he plays Nelson 40 minutes any chance he gets the excuse, and Mudiay does not seem to be learning how to play defense himself either. I would say the biggest problem with the Nuggets defense is the coach.

Return to Denver Nuggets
