Elfrid Payton Shooting Stroke
Is Elfrid's hair affecting his shooting stroke? It looks like the ball touches his hair when he brings the ball up over his head.

Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Yes, he can't put his shooting hand anyway near his head when shooting, so he'll have to develop a weird shooting stroke which isn't going to help him. There was a video somewhere about weird hairstyles causing this problem for basketball players.

I really doubt it. It's not like clothing or a hat. It's just hair. I don't have hair like Elf, but I've had long hair for most of my life. I'm seldom even cognizant of the fact that it's long. I can say from experience though, that constant feedback from conformity police has the opposite effect of it's intended purpose. Praise individuality. This is a non-issue.

He's gotta take that off in the off season. It's not even about whether he cab shoot or not, it's about maturity. Even Melo cut up his rolls after the first couple of years. Its affecting his shot to some extent but I don't think he will go from being elf to curry over just the hair. Still it's time to grow up.

It has nothing to do with individuality or conforming. His hair extends like 6" in front of his forehead, which is right where the ball needs to go in a natural shooting motion. Not to mention when he dribbles the ball up the floor his hair flops around in his field of view. Theres no way its not affecting his play in some form. I don't expect him to turn into an all star if/when he cuts it, but its certainly not helping any either.

Re: Elfrid Payton Shooting Stroke
I specifically asked Dave Love, Elfrid's shooting coach, if he thought hair altered his shot and he said he did not think it did at all.

You mean this guy who has no hair?

Shooting coach or not, how is he supposed to know what it's like shooting with hair like Payton's... there's no way that thing doesn't make contact with the ball.

I love how message board posters who have probably never played ball in their life think they know more than an NBA shooting coach.

Struck a nerve eh?
And, sorry, you are wrong about the hair. Dave Love being bald is a pretty funny reach to act so self-righteous about. The guy is one of the best shooting coaches in basketball. That't why it cracks me up that people question this stuff.

The video cites players like Marcus Smart, who have experienced a downtick in shooting percentage since growing out their hair. When he had shorter hair as a rookie, Smart shot 36.7 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from 3-point range. But once he sported a mohawk this year, those percentages fell to 34.8 and 25.3, respectively.
i mean, just picture-wise, you can see that big hair would affect a jump shooter

Again, if it was an issue, I am 100% sure the Magic would have addressed it. It's just common sense. With Elfrid, he is a hard worker and I doubt so vain that he would not make the changes if told to do so.
I say a lot of people haven't played ball because you look at stuff in absolutes, like everyone's arm makes a perfect 90 degree angle..etc. It's not how it works. A shooting stroke is not math.
Additionally, the release is really the key. Look at all the old school ballers with huge hair and great shots.

i love how people say player X is a hard worker, so they will succeed, even though the NBA is littered with players that were hard workers that never made it.

in all seriousness, no offense meant, but i do hate the argument that so-n-so is a gymrat/hard worker/etc, as if that is all it takes to succeed. you have to have the talent too. as for vanity, you notice not a single bad FT ever attempts them underhand, even though it could/would raise their FT% drastically. They are all vain.

Yeah but my point is that if you watch Elfrid his issues now are more about rhythm (he learned a new motion) and release. I only bring up that he is a hard worker because he completely rebuilt his stroke, and that is incredibly tough.

Ok, then explain to me how. You are saying that his setpoint has to be in a certain place to ensure high shooting %?

Re: Elfrid Payton Shooting Stroke
While the Atlanta commentators were roasting his hair, they zoomed in good during a FT.

Still has the same jacked up angles. The ball is off 45 degrees and his elbow is messed up because he's so far on the other side of his head.
Thing is, he was like that before the hair, it's just the same shot now.
