This doesn't make sense. MVP is chosen by a panel made of journalists and Westbrook was 1st in the media voting for the starting guards in the All-Star game which was done by a lot of the same people who vote for MVP.

All-star voting and mvp is different. When it comes to mvp they focus more on team's seed and record.
But saying he has no chance is not true. It depends on how lebron', harden', curry' itd. case develop.

Not just that, but if you use his logic, James Harden has no chance either. He wasn't top 3 in votes. Just a good example of why the two are not related.

OKC only 19 games away from 50 wins....might be a bad sign for Harden.

There's only 28 games left (time flies) . They'd have to go 19-9, which is unlikely, FiveThirtyEight has Rockets at 56 and Thunder at 47

Yeah, but for Harden's case crucial will be March and its strength of schedule.
Now till the end of February they should go 5-0. And then the show ll begin and houston will be tested.

That's way too big a gap for Westbrook to win MVP. At this point it seems fairly certain that OKC is gonna finish 6th/7th which won't cut it. If they go on a serious run then sure he can have MVP consideration but I really doubt it.

Harden's to lose.

Harden's to lose.

He's leading the league in scoring with a 30 point triple-double average and has everybody in the world on his side. He's going to get very serious MVP consideration and garner a lot of votes. Harden's numbers are incredible in their own right, but 3 seeds also don't win MVP's, so it opens the door for voters who are already reticent on that front. Westbrook's not my choice, but he will be for many voters.

normally would say harden as he has a better record and that matters but averaging a triple double would be too much to ignore maybe.

that said can somebody be MVP if his team really loses in round one?

Regular-season award. But not a great look, explains why Dirk 2006/07 got a lot of flak.

Seeding is important. Its not like rw jh is locked up two men competition.
I d rather say there will be a close race in the end.

If you think Westbrook has just been so good and raised his teams play so much more than Harden, sure, give him MVP, but no way in hell should he get MVP over 1.8 extra rebounds a game.

well sure if the rockets or okc falter down the stretch, they will slip, but right now these two are the clear front runners.

why not? there are 2 seasons in an nba season. nothing wrong with a regular season NBA MVP award.

My MVP rankings that don't matter but I feel like sharing:
1. Harden
2. Kawhi
3. Russ (mostly because 7th seed looking more and more likely)
4. KD
5(a). Steph
5(b). IT

Yeah, that would be silly. I don't get the the obsession with triple-doubles. They are impressive achievements, no doubt, but hyped beyond belief by the media.

Kareem won in 1976 when his team was 6th in the West (out of 9 teams) and had a 40-42 record.

Westbrook performance last night will give him a huge boost. Even with loss.
