1. Football- #1 by far.
2. Basketball- Lineups are more important than plays,
3.Hockey
4.Baseball- Easily last. It seems that all managers use nearly the same strategy.

No way baseball is above basketball. Most of the time baseball managers are are just chewing in the dugout.

Football - Obvious
Baseball - Need a manger with good instincts. Knows when to let pitchers continue and when to yank. Batting order
NHL

Basketball - Unless you're Coach Pop, meaningless.

I think basketball is ahead of hockey. At least in basketball, a coach can draw a play. In hockey, the coach is just doing pep talk during timeouts.

Did any of you ever play a game of basketball with a real coach? They are way more important than you think

1. Football
2. Basketball

I don't watch enough of Hockey to know whether or not it's above Baseball but I do know it's not touching Football or Basketball in terms of coaching importance.

1. Football
2. Basketball
3. Soccer
4. Hockey
5. Baseball

The difference between good and bad coaching is massive in all sports though.

Managers in baseball don't "coach" guys. They set lineups, manage pitchers/pitch counts, or give specific signals from the dugout. And even then the first and third base coaches relay a lot of signals too (keep running, stay, steal, etc.). They provide scouting reports but so do NFL and NBA coaches.

NFL
NBA
MLB

I don't watch hockey so hard for me to say.

Coaching is very important in basketball

Hockey vs Baseball is really the only debate here

This sentence makes no sense  So it's very meaningful if it's literally one person in the world and otherwise meaningless? Maybe there is a conclusion somewhere? What could it possibly be

Coaching in hockey is actually quite important.

You have twice the amount of players on a team than basketball and shuffling different lines is pretty tough. Remember, hockey players play like 1 min intervals all the time . You're constantly shuffling lineups.

And even goalie coaches, a good goalie coach can make all the difference. That position is one of the most nuanced out of any sport.

Coaching is not that important in basketball. Does anyone consider Doc Rivers a good coach? He won a championship in '08 with the Big 3. And if yes, did you consider him a good coach before he won a title? Players >>>>>>> coach in terms of importance in winning in the NBA

Would anyone consider Phil Jackson or Popovich GOAT coach if they weren't fortunate enough to coach all-time great talents in Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, Duncan throughout their careers and thus won nothing? The '00-'02 Lakers would've still three peated had they had Doc Rivers instea of Phil.

NFL is definitely number one tho. Just look at the difference between the Denver Broncos with John Fox as head coach and Gary Kubiak. Says it all.

NFL is by far the most important I think but besides that I think the most important thing that most people need to look at is Coaching outside of in game situations which most people aren't looking at IMO. Talent development and the confidence coaches give to players and managing egos is done outside the lines and we can't tell that type of stuff from what we see, but we can see good results with similar coaches thought many sports that don't require a ton of in game coaching.

Football is the ultimate in game chess match and no other sport really compares IMO. Soccer requires change of formation both due to talent and a game to game matchup. Basketball is more or less executing a philosophy in general and may require double teams and a coach who calls time it's well and subsequently great plays out of timeouts that can help shift momentum are important. Baseball coaching is a bit similar to soccer in that you design your lineup to its general fit as well as opponents and timely substitutions are called. Hockey I can't really pretend to know much about unfortunately.

So soccer and baseball have more game to game than basketball (before playoffs) but less plays than basketball and no timeouts. So depending on how you see it these three are after football.

I have no patience for baseball anymore but some of you are totally underestimating the amount of thought and nuance that goes into managing a game. It's definitely more of a cerebral than a physical sport. Kind of like golf where it's almost more of a game than a sport.

Football (American football) is mostly played by knuckleheads but the strategy, tactics and overall preparation makes it the most dependent sport on coaching. It's important to recruit the right knuckleheads and figure out how to amp them up, but the complex play design and in game adjustments make it a game that smart people should be able to appreciate.

Baseball is almost formulaic. Of course there's a human element to the game but odds, chance and math in general should dictate a lot of the decisions a manager makes.

Don't know enough about hockey or soccer to comment. But I think basketball relies on the individual player skill more than a lot of other sports. As someone who coached lots of youth league hoops teams I can admit that.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything but there is no way coaching is more important in NBA than in NHL

NBA relies much more on individual players and their talents.
