Today's trade between Denver and Portland now has the Grizzlies to owe the 2017 pick to the Portland Trailblazers for the time being unless the Blazers are looking to make more moves.

and why exactly is that? did we previously owe them anything?

Where can I find what picks do we own for the future?

The pick was traded to Portland from Denver as Memphis owed a lottery protected first round pick to Cleveland which was traded to Denver as a part of the Timothey Mozgov deal from a few years ago. That is why is was so important to make the playoffs this year so the pick would be as high as possible. The Blazers who are going nowhere fast will probably also move the pick combined with either Evan Turner or Allen Crabbe as C.J. McCollum's deal kicks in next year and they have no way of getting better in the off season.
