Hornets acquire Chris Andersen, Cash for 2017 (top 55 protected) 2nd Round Pick

Post#1 » by BlackOutBuzz » Mon Feb 13, 2017 5:04 pm

@ESPNSteinLine
The Cavs just traded injured C Chris Andersen to Charlotte, opening up another roster spot by sending the Hornets cash and a second-rounder

Someone has to be going out, plus we just re-upped our 10-day guys. Roberts?

Immediately being waived. Per RB. Getting a 2nd rounder for helping the Cavs with cap relief.

@ESPNSteinLine
The Cavs' trade sending Chris Andersen to Charlotte only costs 'em cash; Charlotte sends a heavily protected second-rounder to seal the deal

I hate this team.

Guess the 2nd is protected, curious what the protection looks like. Don't mind this at all, pretty irrelevant though. If the 2nd was any good, I'm sure a lot of teams would have been willing to hop on that.

Don't understand why you would dislike that move, it's just a purely administrative move.

I'm sure it's of the top 55 protected variety, but I still hate this. Comes down to trading cap space for some cash while giving them an open roster spot, a TPE, and watch them sweep us in a couple months.

We were above the cap right? Figured we might have used the TDaniels TPE to do the deal.

What's the rule on matching salary for trade purposes if you aren't sending out any salary? I know you typically have to match like 125%, but what if the guy is like Andersen making only $1M? He's played > 10 seasons, so I think his vet minimum is basically the same amount.

I'll only be annoyed if we burned the TPE for this.

This makes sense as to why CHA hadn't announce the 2nd 10 Day for Mike Tobey yet. This transaction, then waiving of Andersen happens first.

Albert Nahmad ‏@AlbertRandom1 3m3 minutes ago
Hornets only apparent motivation is the cash. Cavs only had $750K to offer in exchange for the $335K left on Anderson’s contract.

CLE will get a top 55 protected 2017 2nd rounder pick from. It will not convey.

Keith Smith ‏@KeithSmithNBA 1m1 minute ago
As @EricPincus termed it, the pick is a "nothing something" required to complete the deal, as both sides are required to trade "something".

What exactly is the TPE?

So Hornets essentially get 415K (750K - 335K) in cash by using up Daniels TPE? Meh, whatever.

Cleveland was so far in the tax that they owe $2.50 for every $1 in salary. They likely sent us enough to cover the half season or so on his deal while saving themselves a ton in tax.

It allows us to take on more salary than we are sending out by more than we are normally allowed to. I haven't researched enough to fully understand how they are created, though. Link about it - http://midlevelexceptional.com/2014/07/03/nba-salary-cap-trade-exception/

MJ made $400K, while CLE saved $2.5M in luxury tax payments and cleared a roster space.

Are you sure we needed it? Do you have to salary match a minimum salary?

ETA: think we didn't need the TPE.

86. How are minimum-salary players handled in trades?

The "Minimum Player Salary exception" allows teams to acquire minimum-salary players1 without regard to salary matching under the Traded Player exception (see question number 83). For example, a team over the cap can trade a second round draft pick to another team in exchange for a minimum-salary player, even if he is a 10-year veteran earning over $1 million.

They could use the money to sign a veteran for one-third the season at the veteran's minimum. This team has a leadership deficit.

Yeah you're right, I'm frustrated and didn't realize Andersen was a true minimum contract.
