Dodgers' Propects are Hot Topics

Post#561 » by Ranma » Sun Feb 12, 2017 4:22 am

Jim Callis, MLB.com (2/10/17)
If the Dodgers are going to limit right-hander Walker Buehler's innings this year as part of his recovery from Tommy John recovery, wouldn't it make more sense for him to throw 60 innings out of the bullpen in Los Angeles? That would be following the Carlos Martinez or Adam Wainwright path.
-- Brandon J., Atladena, Calif.

Buehler has seen just five innings of game action since having his elbow reconstructed shortly after signing as a first-round pick in 2014, so the Dodgers aren't immediately going to hand him a spot in their bullpen. But it's not at all out of the question that he could make it to Los Angeles at some point in 2017.

When Buehler returned to the mound last summer, a fastball that topped out at 96 mph at Vanderbilt began sitting in the mid-90s and peaking at 99. He may not maintain that velocity when he logs starter innings again, but it's a definite plus fastball to go with a pair of potential plus breaking balls, a promising changeup and impressive control and command. He could rank as one of the game's very best pitching prospects by midseason and tempt the Dodgers to add him to their relief corps in the second half.

Jose De Leon, who was traded to the Rays on Jan. 23, also showed up on all four national top 100 lists, with an average rank of 43.25. He was 29th on the Baseball America list.

Walker probably has a higher ceiling than a setup guy for his career, but I would think he would make an exellent setup man for Kenley by August. Sergio has a chance to be a good placeholder but doesn't have Walker's velocity. Sergo to me is the best spot reliever against RH bats only. if he happens to face 3 straight RHBs, sure, but I am not too comfortable of him being our primary setup man comes October, facing power hitting lefties with his 87 mph fastballs and neutralized frisbie slider as his arsenal of weapons.

Sports Illustrated's Top Dodger Prospect for 2017

Post#568 » by Ranma » Sun Feb 26, 2017 6:19 pm

Jay Jaffe, SI.com (2/22/17)
Los Angeles Dodgers: Cody Bellinger, 1B

Image

2017 Age: 21
Highest Prospect Ranking: 6 (ESPN)
MLB ETA: 2017

If the son of former Yankees utilityman Clay Bellinger doesn't outdo his old man, something will have gone very wrong, because the 6'4" lefty is among the top dozen prospects on three of the four lists and is a star in the making. A fourth-round 2013 pick out of an Arizona high school, he's drawing acclaim for his rapid adjustments; in '16, he hit .263/.359/.484 with 23 homers at Double A Tulsa, with three more knocks in three games at Triple A Oklahoma City. Bellinger has plus-plus power and has been successful at shortening his swing to cut down on strikeouts. Thanks to his size and mobility, his defense grades out as plus-plus as well; he could be a Gold Glove contender at first base and can play the outfield as well, even spotting in centerfield. With Adrian Gonzalez signed through 2018, Bellinger is the heir apparent and could help the Dodgers down the stretch later this year.

Developing Assets to Cash in for Higher Upside Propositions

Post#573 » by Ranma » Fri Mar 3, 2017 7:15 am

Quake Griffin wrote:what's up with the DeJong trade?

These are the type of deals I love where we trade for talent on the cheap, develop it, then trade it away for higher upside prospects who could do very well in our developmental program. We acquired De Jong for international slot money. Then, our staff developed him further into a near-MLB-ready arm before dealing him away to a team in need of pitching for a package of prospects that look more promising, especially given our surplus of back-end rotation starters.

Dustin Nosler, DodgersDigest.com (3/2/17)
As for the Dodgers’ return, well, I like it. A lot. Jackson, 23, has been a low-key favorite of mine since the Mariners drafted him in the fifth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. There are a couple of things he does really well — he runs fast and he plays good defense at shortstop. In his debut season, he showed glimpses of being quite the 5th-round find. He hit .358/.432/.447 with and 11.3 percent walk rate and 47 stolen bases (in 51 attempts). Granted, that was him dominating the Northwest League as a collegiate draftee (took home MVP honors), so those numbers needed to be taken with a large grain of salt.
...

While I like Jackson, the more intriguing piece of the deal is Zabala. Aside from having an 80-grade name, Zabala also possesses a fastball that has 80-grade velocity. The Mariners signed him out of the Dominican Republic in 2014. He’s armed with a high-90s fastball and a low-80s hammer curveball that some see as at least an average pitch. His command is poor — sometimes very poor. That’s what has plagued him in his brief pro career. One plus is the fact he has allowed just two home runs in 102 1/3 career innings. Granted, that has all come in complex ball (DSL, AZL), but it’s something to keep an eye on. Zabala is strictly a relief prospect at this rate, but the ceiling on him is pretty high.

Dodgers Land Drew Jackson and Aneurys Zabala for Chase De Jong in Win-Win Deal

David Hood, TrueBlueLA.com (3/2/17)
Jackson’s prospect status is largely buoyed by his defensive skills, where he should be able to stay at shortstop. He isn’t overly smooth and fluid with his movements, but he’s plenty quick and can make any throw. Should the Dodgers want to try him as a utility player, his arm strength should carry over to center field, where his plus speed should also be an asset.

As a hitter, Jackson lacks the power his athletic 6’2, 200 lb.-frame would suggest. His offensive game is derived too much on putting the ball on the ground and legging out hits. He has shown some swing improvements from his Stanford video, but his mechanics are a little stiff and slow. He’s already 23, so a complete swing tear down may be tough to complete at this point, but Jackson’s offensive game will need to be retooled to see him as a viable major league candidate.
...

Aneurys Zabala is a greater unknown, having spent two years in the Arizona Rookie League as a hard-throwing reliever. Zabala looks much larger than his listed 6’2, 175 lbs. and he delivers high-90s fastballs with little effort. Zabala’s arm action is long and his slot and release point will waver from pitch to pitch. Zabala’s curveball shows promise, but given the inconsistencies in his delivery, it doesn’t always appear sharp on video. He’s only twenty, and given his stuff, he will have a greater margin of error as he develops, but at this point, he remains a raw arm.

Jackson rates as the Dodgers’ 29th-best prospect, with Zabala checking in at 50th.

to be honest, I don't see either one ever making it to the bigs.

but we didn't have to release anyone yet, that's the biggest importance for now.

Ryu/McCarthy/Kazmir are all on the bubble and Rob Segedin/SVS/MIcah Johnson will have to duke it out for that 1 remaining spot.

Maybe Eric Gagne can sneak his way into that final roster spot. I keep saying that I'm very harsh or unforgiving of PED users, but I'd make an exception for Game Over, especially with the shot at redemption given to Yasmani Grandal.

I still own his #38 jersey with no name in the back, thanks to Frank McDirt's decision to remove them.

since Eric will be back from team Canada when they are bounced out in the first round before I make my pilgrimmage to Arizona, I am gonna rock his jersey this year.
