Do we suck?

No, we don't. Kemba's an all-star, b*tch. BBMF!

Eh, probably not, but man do we have some headscratchers.

We might suck when Cody or Nic or MKG don't play.

Uh, I think we might suck, our bench especially reeks of suckitude.

The scoring distributions below demonstrate how efficiency metrics without context are incomplete and why shooting isn't necessarily synonymous with offensive versatility...ie Marvin can be amazing but what happens when ish breaks down and you *need* an individual to create as the clock winds down?

Cody is more efficient but that's cause nearly 0 is required outside his comfort zone. MKG? The same MR distribution as Marco, the same FT rate as Nic, he leads CHA in generating easy FB points, and he's 2nd to Cody in % PITP. Not shown is MKG's team-leading Post Up PPP and his silly 6.6 TOV ratio.

On that subject, teams produce about 1.05 PPP but that drops to around .96 or .97 PPP in the half court. Meaning teams/players that rely solely on half court production better be mistake free with the ability to create for themselves and others in space. Which makes MKG a conundrum and a potential solution, assuming CHA balances the court elsewhere and MKG exploits defenses at another position.

Vanderbilt_Grad wrote: I disagree with the first part MA. My eyeball observation is that the team force feeds MKG early in the 1st in the hope that he will get going. Some nights he does and shoots all game long. Most nights though he doesn't and the team will try again a bit in the 3rd, but he's shooting poorly by then and they mostly go away from him. So I looked up the numbers.
MKG shooting by quarter:
1st 3.1 attempts at 47.3%
2nd 1.7 attempts at 53.8%
3rd 2.0 attempts at 41.1%
4th 1.2 attempts at 35.8%

Those numbers seem to back up my eyeball test.

Are the FGA's a reflection of altered usage or the starter-bench minute allocations by quarter? I'd also consider the size of the usage "pie" throughout the game. Specifically, bench players often play proportionally higher Q4 minutes + high usage starters take more shots.

For example Nic's usage drops too and Frank's increases cause bench + Kemba helper.

As for PF ... that's something that's been argued to death here. I get the appeal and theory. I just don't think his body could handle it for a long season. There are still too many really big guys out there even if the position is more perimeter oriented than it used to be.

Do we have evidence of a heightened injury risk? Cause anecdotally 1 labrum tear was a non-contract spill, the other diving for a loose ball.

Braggins wrote:If we replace MKG, it needs to be with a two way player otherwise our defense will just not be good enough. It isn't good enough even with MKG. I'm not sure who we expect to get who is good enough on offense to be our second scorer, while also being good enough on defense to guard the opposing teams best wing (something Batum obviously can't do). MKG isn't limiting us anymore than Batum is. Batum isn't good enough to be our second scorer and also has to be covered on defense because he basically just sucks on that side of the ball.

I agree. I had thought about an MKG for Wilson Chandler style swap. Add incentives where necessary.

EDIT: and by add incentives I meant from Denver to Charlotte ;)

At this point the losses have come so fast and furious we are in contention for the 4th worst record in the league.

There are a few teams like dallas, new orleans, miami, Sacramento, New york, and Portland who are GUARANTEED to pass us now if we hold Cody out.

Teams like Philly, Minnesota, and Orlando are all right in the mix if we commit to tanking.

I think we should shut kemba down with a mysterious knee injury for a handful of games after the ASB before other teams commit fully to tanking as well.

Cody should clearly be held out the rest of the year hes really the tank centerpiece.

Mkg could always suffer an injury without raising any eyebrows.

And marv is a veteran with a bad hand. He'd be a great addition to team tank as he would cramp our spacing and lead to some really foul lineups like roberts/bellinelli/lamb/frank/Plumlee that would be tankaseptic

It seemed like the tank was too far out of reach to be worthwhile but this skid has reached epic proportions.

Fultz, Ball, or jackson i feel could really make a huge impact on our outlook.

Several other good prospects and im sure a few will pan out

Third-worst team in franchise history. 1988-89 and 1989-90 were better.

What this team is bad at: Everything.

What this team is good at: Crushing our hopes and dreams.

Been a real gut punch as a Panthers and Hornets fan the last 6 months.

Return to Charlotte Hornets
