the problem is there is no motivation to make it better...

its a marketing and commercial event. teams dont want there guys to go and if they do go they dont want them getting hurt. then you have a league in a period without any real super competitive guys like a kobe. stars dont want to be in it because there is no money in it and they are scared of getting clowned on twitter (not really an issue 2000 and earlier).

we need things to align right... there needs to be a guy who is a top10 dunker who is also a top 10 player who wants to go out and do something sick and beat people. and we need it in like MSG with a production crew who knows how set the stage and lighting so it doesnt feel like a ymca on sunday morning

The runner up has played less than 25 NBA minutes this season.

Yup yup... low expectations...

Teams with spare roster spots should sign the best dunkers not in the NBA to 10-day contracts so they can take part in the dunk contest. Because clearly playing in the NBA any decent amount of minutes is not a qualifier.

Well you should have watched Fultz get destroyed by Markaanen tonight? After all, your team will have a very high pick barring a 20 game Nets winning streak.

Probably should have, haven't paid very close attention to the NCAA. What do you think of Fultz?

I haven't watched him enough, but I do have this concern:\

Agreed. They should motion-capture each player practicing his dunk sometime before the contest and show a virtual version of the dunk so judges know what they're supposed to see.

I also think the rule should be that the dunk must be in theory doable in a real game (i.e. no more props or traveling), and that the final score for each dunk should be lowered by one point for each failed attempt.

Im just as disappointed in the 3pt contest. Those were some low ass scores for how this 3pt era is and the moneyballs now

yeah... the weekend has truly shifted to a millenial event. just give everyone 9 money balls so everyone can get an ok score, dunk contest everyone gets a 9 unless they miss 12 attempts.

participation trophy era in full effect

Which is why the dunk contest has turned into who can do a above average dunk on the first attempt.

Those wanting big names to be in it are mis informed. If you add LeBron, Westbrook, Paul George--you will be getting the same product with worse results but you add name recognition

The main problem is the stars don't do these any more. I mean you had Jordan, Dominique, Carter, Kobe, etc doing the dunk contest.

The dunk contest is always the worst of the 3 for me.

There are only so many dunks you can do with no trampoline. We have reached the point of who can do the same dunk you have seen 10000x before between the legs over somebody on the first attempt. Which made last year so great. Gordon v Lavine did everything on their first attempt.

Its not like the Xgames where you can add a longer drop in or add a bigger jump for more time in the air to do tricks.

Too many props in the dunk off. Stop with all the jumping over stuff. Last year it was a straight dunk off. Limit props to one dunk only.

Too little spot up shooters in the 3-pt contest. Where are the Korvers, the Crawfords, and the Reddicks? Throw in Harden.

Disappointing night overall. A bunch of cringe moments all around.

im pretty sure one of those three could have managed to make a clean dunk with 57 tries.

its not like these guys put ona crazy show and the crowd wasnt in it. it was turrrrible

The standards of creativity are so much higher now

if creativity is jumping over someone and dunking thats been done like a jillion times.

last year we saw creativity. this year... not so much

Like I said, its not the Xgames where you can extend takeoffs and jumps for bigger tricks. Without a trampoline you reach a level of greatness on dunks. There is only so much you can do. Which is where props got added to the mix. Now it has turned into who can do the best dunk on the first attempt being all that matters.
