Started Lincoln on the Bardo. This is what just about every page looks like:

Read on Twitter

Never read anything like it. Too early to tell if I'm gonna enjoy it or not, but everyone is calling it one of the best novels in years.

Reading the 2nd book in Neal Stephenson's 'The Baroque Cycle' - The Confusion. I think people either love or loathe Neal Stephenson. I am not as engaged as I was with 'Quicksilver' off the bat but we'll see where it goes. Anyone else here read this series?

RS: loving 'The Expanse' right now. Great recommend. That Lincoln book looks more like a stage play than a novel. Reminds me of a book I read in my early 20's by Nicholson Baker featuring footnotes that often went for pages. Those conceptual formats are absolute hit and miss. I'd be curious to hear your final thoughts.

Spoiler:
More or less. I think he just can tell they're not Saviors, there are a lot of them, and they are well armed. It's a big opportunity.

And likely that Gabriel is with them so he knows they're friendly to him and his cause.

Definitely seems like the obvious conclusion. I'm calling red herring. Though I don't know the true source of Ricks pleasure grin. I do suspect it has something to do with a familiar face. Any others that might have disappeared only to now reappear?

The guy above me changed his name to DingleJerry based on a suggestion in a different thread.

I'll elaborate. I forgot who it was, but someone suggested we needed a distinction between all the guys with really similar usernames: BucksPackers, BadgersBucks, MerpDerp, etc. So he had a hilarious suggestion of what they switch to, aka DingleJerry. 8-)

Ha! That makes more sense now. I'm pretty sure the english translation of BucksPackers to RealGM is DingleJerry so kudos.

Saw Arrival this weekend. There's a great movie in there somewhere, but I thought the editing and plot pacing was poor. I know they wanted to surprise the audience with their twist, but it came off as confusing and unbelievable in the end to me.

I can see where you are coming from but I really enjoyed it, I'm a big sci-fi guy and its hard to get a plot twist to surprise me like they did.

Spoiler:
I mean, I started getting an inclination about the plot twist when Louise was dreaming about her daughter and said something to her to the effect of "if you want math, ask your father." Knowing that Ian was an engineer tipped me off that she actually was seeing the future. But yeah, when she asked Costello "who is that girl" in the dream, is only confirmed that suspicion.

But if the language itself was the gift that allowed people to perceive their future possibilities, then why was Louise having these dreams prior to even interacting with Abbott and Costello? Or did learning the language actually impact events prior to meeting A&C(and if so, wouldn't have that caused her to make an assortment of other decisions in her interactions with them?).

It just didn't add up to me. Also - the idea of choosing to have a daughter who is going to die a terrible death at such a young age without telling your husband is absolutely horrifying to me, but that's a different story.

I don't really disagree with anything you said. There was arguably some big plot holes for sure.

I really wanted to like it. And even tho it wasn't bad or anything, I just couldn't give it a 'thumbs up'.

I also loved Arrival, save for some lazy dialogue at times. The worst part about the movie is

Spoiler:
when Jeremy Renner says "Let's make a baby". :banghead:

Spoiler:
She starts having the visions as she starts understanding their language, which is understood in essentially the same way. This is why the language is represented by circles - with no actual beginning or end as we think of them but only as part of a whole. Whether or not she's gaining the power solely on her own or because the Aliens are already giving her the power somehow, I don't know.

The moral question is a complicated one but I think the resolution the story takes is a very happy and optimistic one. Remember again that she now is able to see all of time as a whole, so she has information that Ian doesn't have access to. She knows the heartache it will cause but chooses in the end that the joy and love they will both feel is worth it, for both of him.
