Republicans hate Stan Van Gundy
Man.. have you ever read the threads on the Detroit (newspaper) websites regarding the Pistons. I'm neither Republican or Democrat so I can view this from a un-biased angle. People hate his guts over the Trump comments he made. It's pretty embarrassing really. If you don't like the job he's doing, I get it. But don't insult the guy because his views are different than yours. Van Gundy may have screwed up by speaking out, I wonder if this has truly had any impact on ticket sales. The right hates his guts and they won't let it go.

I've noticed every comment section on the websites are SVG bashing over it. This is why I say keep politics out of sports.

I find the whole Trump thing fascinating tbh
In the land of the free people can say whatever they want...then you have people going "He can't say THAT!"
Then he wins & people seem surprised that he's standing there going "you're fake news, **** you, **** happened in Sweden, you're fake news"
Like ummm WTF did you expect he would be like?
Then you've got people like SVG & Pop going "WTF? How does this guy get elected" & some people go off on THEM!
Freedom of speech is for everyone yeah - not just those you agree with!
Being able to speak your mind - intelligently or not - is something people fought and DIED for!
As an Aussie I thought Obama being elected was gonna make a massive difference as far as how you guys viewed race & class...
But it seems like us you will always struggle with the great divide because people KNOW they can drive the wedge in there whenever they want

IB4L...lol...
Do you know if online posters hate Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr as much as SVG? They share similar sentiments.

Are people saying he CAN'T say that? Not that I've seen.
Saying that he SHOULDN'T say things like that is completely different than saying he shouldn't be allowed to. Its a distinction people continually and amazing fail to make, and an extremely important one.
And the people upset that he's saying all those things as president are for the most part the 54% of the United States that did not vote for the guy (myself included). The people who voted for him still for the most part support him and don't mind the absurd and inflammatory things that he says.

Not sure.. I don't pay attention to fans reactions over Kerr and Pop. I read Detroit newspapers and the comment sections in their websites. Pretty sure I made that clear in the original post.

The NBA is an overwhelmingly liberal circle. That's just the way it is.

Re: Republicans hate Stan Van Gundy
Look, I share SVG's beliefs. If that renders me too biased (or if you block me for it, lol), so be it.
I respect it when someone can honestly answer a question. If SVG were going off on political tangents that were unrelated to the moment at hand then I would be turned off, but he's simply responding to the queries he's being given.
I love it when Pop and Westbrook and others call out the media on their silly, unimportant questions. I also love it when they give a genuine return for a serious, important question.

Re: Republicans hate Stan Van Gundy
The problem was the way he did it. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs but when you take politics to a extreme and basically call the state of Michigan racist for voting the way they did there will be backlash. SVG doesn't have a filter and I don't care about him as anything more then a coach for my favorite team so it doesn't phase me but this was a given when he said it. Like I said keep politics off the basketball court.

I've seen news reports here in Oz where people say he"CAN'T" but they actually mean SHOULDN'T
The leader of a nation should not say some of the stuff Trump says.
But he got elected saying it so it ain't gonna stop.
BTW, is that 54% thing true? Dude got 46% of the vote and won?
You guys got a weird set up though with the Election college stuff

Yes. Hillary got 48% of the vote, Trump got 46%, and the remaining voted third party or wrote someone in.
Hillary won the states she got by wider margins than Trump won his.
For instance Trump won Michigan and Wisconsin both by less than one percent but got all the electoral votes of those states. Hillary (as an example) won my home state of California by a nearly 2 to 1 margin.
The electoral result there was the same.
Bush also lost the popular vote to Gore in 2000, but by a much smaller margin. Its why you hear Trump crying about people voting against him illegally. It kills his ego that he lost the popular vote.

Re: Republicans hate Stan Van Gundy
I've noticed it too and find it rather annoying. I can understand negative comments if the article in question was related to what he said, but these comments show up on pretty much any article related to SVG. The fact that the season hasn't gone well has only added fuel to the fire.
It seems most of the comment sections for online news sites are overly political and nasty as a whole. The one thing that annoys me though is when people say, "stick to sports" or "keep politics out of it," yet they're the ones politicizing an article/story that has nothing to do with politics.
I also noticed there were some fake news stories on FB about SVG after he made those comments about Trump. The fake sites totally made up statements that SVG never said. For example, the fake news article falsly stated that SVG called for an NBA strike until Trump was removed from office, and claimed SVG called Trump voters various derogatory terms. It wouldn't surprise me if many of these negative commenters see stuff like that and just assume it's true.

I do think that once you make those kinds of comments, you become more polarizing. That's why Michael Jordan never spoke politics. "Republicans buy shoes too," was a memorable, and very true, quote.
I've seen a couple of political posts about SVG and a bunch of mean ones on the news and freep. Is that tied to his comments in November? The political ones, yes, the mean ones, maybe. I voted for Trump and am a season ticket holder. When SVG said what he said, I thought to myself that he's entitled to his opinion, and that he said it in a mature fashion, and really haven't thought about it since. I think SVG, Kerr and Pop are good at what they do, period.
It's a very emotional time in history and a lot of people are very emotional about this topic on both sides. But I don't think those three coaches had their emotions get the best of them when they shared their thoughts.
I do think there's a large group of people that just want to concentrate on sports, and not listen to politics from sports figures. Dexter Fowler just spoke out about Trump's travel ban (his wife is from Iran) and got an earful from Cardinals fans, most telling him to just play baseball.
I think that overall, SVG has done a great job. Something's just wrong right now, and it's hard to pinpoint it. It smells like a locker room issue, and maybe in the next couple of days, we'll all find out.....
Has SVG's comments had an effect on ticket sales? Maybe a little. Has the Pistons listless, underachieving play had an effect? I think it's more this.......
