In years past, even when the cast is perceived to be pretty bad you'd have a few that stood out and could see becoming stars. Looking at the current cast I can't even find one. I know many will say McKinnon but I have never found her to be funny and I think she gets overrated because they put her in nearly every sketch. Cecily Strong is probably the closest for me.
Also, they need something different for the Weekend Update. Jost is plain cheese and Che is just not meant for a platform like that
Every generation has their folks. In this current iteration, I think the writing has been the challenge, not the acting. Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan, Beck Bennett, Vanessa Bayer, and Aidy Bryant generally nail their sketches fairly consistently. Kyle Mooney is great when he's in the right role. Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, Melissa Villasenor, and Sasheer Zamata show flashes of greatness when they're used in the right role. Leslie Jones - as polarizing as she can be - is getting better. Her Trump sketch last week was pretty funny. Kenan is Kenan.
If I had to guess who had major potential to become stars outside of SNL, I'd point to the women (all of them, but especially Cecily, McKinnon, Zamata, and Jones) and Pete Davidson. Davidson, in particular, could become a superstar ala Will Ferrell, or a premier stand up comic. Mikey Day has pretty much secured a job on SNL for as long as he wants - they put him in almost everything these days - but I don't know if he can break out of there into something bigger.
