Re: How much goodwill does McD have with you?
I would very comfortably bet anyone on this forum that McD is not fired regardless of our luck in the lottery. "This project" of his has been going on for what, a year lol? Rebuilding needs patience, not constantly shifting in and out GMs with different visions.

Time runs out for everyone, even McD, that's just the way life is sometimes and we just have to deal with it. If McD fails to get a star whether in this draft or via trade, he will be gone faster than Tucker can finish a burrito, I guarantee it.
Edit: Also Sarver isn't a patient man, we all know that and that will never change with him.

I think he has a bit more leeway than that but the only reason I think his job is on the line is because his deal finishes this summer I believe. Last I heard, summer came and went without an extension going into the last year of his deal.

I certainly think it's interesting that the Lakers only gave Buss 3 years to fix the Lakers while the Suns seem okay with giving McD much more time.
I guess it's fair to say that certain franchises are held to a higher level of expectations than others?

He's been GM of the Suns for 4 years now. Not "a year".
If he fell in love with that middling 48 win team and sacrificed properly rebuilding to try and reciprocate that type of success the next season then that's his fault, not anyone else's.

Longest serving GM out of the 30 without a playoff game.
I think some of that is Sarver's fault for instructing him to win now in season 2-3.

We've been rebuilding for a year. Every other year we were bringing in players and making moves in attempts to win, this is the first year that we've accepted where we are and embraced rebuilding.
Why would any GM not try to build on a 48 win season? I don't get how you can fault him for that lol no one gets hired and immediately tanks. It's not even like he failed building a team, until personalities started flying off the handle those teams were at least winning more games than they lost. At least he's smart enough to realize that trying to win games and compete in the Warriors era is a waste of time and that we need to collect assets and build for the future.

Re: How much goodwill does McD have with you?
He's very good on his most important task: drafting good players.
Everything else is just irrelevant, especially with the way NBA is now.
If you cant hit in the draft = GONE
you only sign good free agents if you are a contender or a super market team

I'm still onboard with him, he's made some mistakes, but I like how he's unafraid to make moves and think he's usually on point drafting.
He landed a potential star with the 13th pick in Devin Booker, that's a big deal.

I'm not so sure I see him as the draft savant many others do. Booker was a great pick, no denying that, but he was also considered BPA at that 13th spot...it's not like McD took a huge leap of faith there(the way the Bucks did with Giannis/the way the Nuggets did with Jokic). Len was an uninspired pick, Goodwin is out of the league, Ennis is gonna be out of the league, and Warren is decidedly average. Jury's still out on Ulis/Bender/Chriss, but I was happy with those picks when he made them. Let's see how they turn out.
His draft record is okay. Not sure I'd call him "very good".

I agree about Len, Goodwin was a project that was the 29th pick in a bad draft and no one after him besides Crabbe is doing anything in the NBA either, and I still think the jury is out on Warren with how good he looked to start the season and the mysterious circumstances of his injury. The rest of the season will be very telling on where TJ is at now that PJ is out of the picture.
Didn't we draft Tyler Ennis for Toronto and they backed out or something like that..? I can hardly blame him for that.

The narrative that Booker was a no brainer is just not right. I remember because I wanted Booker in the draft thread and there was a lot of pushback here.

Re: How much goodwill does McD have with you?
I would say that we wait until McD actually gets that star player. He indicated on Gambo that a major deal was discussed during the trade deadline but there wasn't enough time to negotiate. This coming offseason, draft and free agency will be his last stand.
If he pulls of a major trade and we add a quality FA then he will become a legend. McD should be aiming for the #1 pick as that helps this team. I do want to mention that I have complete faith in his ability.

Come on, that is not true.
Every team in the NBA can say that if they want to make excuses for his bad management.
Every year is the first one rebuilding for franchises that do not make the correct moves. It is a classic move in the NBA, really sad because we are one of the worst overall the last seven years.
I am sure that if we trade Chandler and Bledsoe in the summer McDonough is gonna say that 2017/18 is the first year of our rebuilding....another time.

It's absolutely true. McDonough got lucky throwing together a team that competed in that 48 win season and tried building on it, but through both mistakes of his own and the personalities on this team we are where we are now. In a perfect world where players accept their roles and aren't dumb enough to jump someone in broad daylight and **** talk fans, a team with Dragic, Bledsoe, IT, Booker, Marcus, Markieff, Chandler, Warren, Len, and PJ would be pretty competitive. Not to mention we'd still have the Lakers pick if we wanted to offer up for one of the many available stars this offseason. Unfortunately feelings get hurt, people get mugged, and **** happens. Call those rebuilding years if you want I guess, but up until last year every offseason felt more like the Suns trying to re-tool for a potential playoff run, not set themselves up for the future.
So how is this not the first year we're dedicated to a rebuild? Were we not just signing Tyson Chandler and chasing LMA in free agency last Summer to try winning more games? He was making win-now moves every offseason, they finally blew up in his face and he at least made something out of it, and he finally decided to go full youth movement and add 2 more 18 year olds in the lottery to our other 19 year old. We've been starting a 19 year old at PF all season despite him clearly not being ready for it instead of going out and getting a stop gap starter, when just last year we were starting PJ Tucker and giving Warren chump minutes unless he caught fire. If that's not an obvious sign of committing to rebuilding then I don't know what is.
