For any Wire fans, I strongly recommend David Simon's book "Homicide" and Simon and Ed Burn's book "The Corner".

Actually "strongly recommend" doesn't even convey it. They're great.

And they're also amazing as companion pieces to the show- for example, you know exactly who (or what) Marlo Stanfield is, among other things.

Basically, the Wire is even better than you thought.

All that's known so far is it was "due to complications from surgery".

Not watching, but guessing LA LA land will take a bunch of Oscar's home. I thought it was over rated.

Saw lion yesterday thought it was an incredible story. Don't think it has the Oscar buzz but it was a powerful gripping story.

I have seen NONE of the movies nominated. Literally not a one. Not for the first time either.

Last time I felt invested in the Oscars was when The Coens and PT Anderson both won big- 2007? 2008?

I'll still flip it on and off though a bit, like I always do.

I love movies. I love well crafted films. I love getting fired up over a wonderful story. However, regarding the Oscars, at a point I'm watching entertainers giving themselves awards on who made better art and it seems a little ridiculous.

It's really hard to get into the Oscars when you look at the history of, say, the best picture award. They always get it wrong.

This sounds more like you have some unreasonable expectations. What do you consider "getting it wrong?" If their pick for BP doesn't exactly match up with yours? They almost always award something that's at least good.
