Wrong question. People correctly view the East as pathetic so finishing #1 there will be discounted.

The MVP award is going to come down to how many games Houston wins. If Houston has over 55 wins then Harden will probably win. If Houston starts to lose then Lebron will probably win if Westbrook doesn't go crazy.

No matter what happens, everyone will ignore that Curry has been more important to the Warriors than Lebron has been to the Cavs.

Who will be the MVP this season? Harden or Westbrook?

Post#462 » by robbie84 » Tue Feb 28, 2017 2:14 pm

What are people's thoughts on this?
Right now it's between Harden and Westbrook in most people's eyes. If you think it's someone else say why.
But of they both keep playing this way it will be either Harden or Westbrook.

Who you got? Harden's taken this Rockets team to a legitimate underdog contender.
Westbrook has just tied Wilt's record for 2nd most triple doubles in a season with 41- an amazing accomplishment.
So who you got and why?

Gonna be pretty close I think.
One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.

4 teams are projected as 50 win teams. Hawks 45 mins. 8th seed in the east is better than the 8th seed in the west.

9-11 is better in the east.

It's not amazing but pathetic. Nah it's gottenbetter than the last 10 years

Harden will win because of the record being the tie breaker.

Westbrook is ultimately going to fade everyone in the media is already interjecting their caveats about wins. Somehow I feel like Harden's chances at MVP will be decided by what Eric Gordon and Lou Williams can do coming off the bench to keep them within shouting distance of the Cavs win record.

Isaiah Thomas is just plain trash at defense but it's respectable how hard he tries. Still no realistic chance he gets within the top 3. Amazing leap by him this season though.

Not really, if they are gonna award it for record, Kawhi has a better case than Lebron as the spurs on track for 67 wins. 60 wins is nothing compared to 67.

The only case Kawhi has is wins, and nothing else.

LeBron beats him in nearly every major category statistically. I have a hard time believing the media will vote for a Spurs player anyways, unless it's runaway obvious, and even then, who knows.

Not to mention, both players have the same record when actually on the floor 41-12. Cavs are 0-5 without LeBron while the Spurs are 4-1 without Kawhi.

So even at this point the "team record" doesn't really give him any boost. Unless players get credit for wins they didn't participate in.

This whole "LeBron is resting" thing is kind of hypocritical for any player outside of Harden and Westbrook, all other players who have any chance have missed games.

Kawhi

48.7 FG%
38.7 3FG%
2.0 3s/game
25.8 PPG
4.6 RPG
3.3 APG
1.8 SPG
0.7 BPG
2.1 TPG

Lebron

54.1 FG%
38.7 3FG%
1.7 3s/game
25.7 PPG
7.9 RPG
8.9 APG
1.4 SPG
0.6 BPG
4.3 TPG

By my count Kawhi has Lebron beat 5-3 with a tie in 3FG%. But Lebron dominates every statistical category?

The MVP will come down to Harden or Westbrook.

Harden, Durant, Lebron all have to be above Westbrook at this point.

You have to be a 1 or 2 seed to usually win an MVP. Harden is close at 3 so I think he takes it.

I think Westbrook should get it but it will be Harden. Dantoni is da real MVP but you can't give the coach the MVP, only COTY

I don't really consider 0.1 ppg more "beating", considering the difference can be completely attributed to FTAs, the only category where Kawhi has an advantage is steals. They are essentially equivalent in PPG, and BPG, TS%, and BBref +/-.

Lebron has a better FG%, RPG, APG, Assist:Turnover, BPM, VORP, RPM, RPM Wins, and the big one IMO, On/off (1.4 to 13.9).

Just personally, I don't think Kawhi had a case over Lebron, or the ability to get votes over Lebron. Not that either guy has a chance really, they both need other guys ahead of them to basically lose the award, which includes Harden and probably Westbrook.

LeBron.

Rockets will finish with a worse record than the Cavs, LeBron will turn it up in late March and take it.

Lebron turn it up in late March? Not convinced. To me, the choice for MVP really should be between Lebron and Durant, and personally I'd put Lebron a touch ahead, but as of last season I felt he figured something out and took a page out of Shaq's playbook and stopped worrying about the regular season nearly so much, and frankly, I feel that helped him a lot, because I feel he was more mentally with it for the entire duration of the playoff grind, which was why the Cavs won. I expect Lebron is going to continue to coast and go underappreciated until the playoffs this season, too.

As for who will actually win? My guess is Harden, but Durant, Kawhi, Westbrook and even Lebron have outside shots at the award depending on how the season finishes.

Leonard is a more serious candidate than Westbrook, but he sadly won't get the votes. Better season too.

Sure if you mean the Spurs are more likely to get a win resting their entire team than OKC is if Westbrook sat out

If Russell averages a triple double then they'll give it to him especially with the KD-Russ storyline going. He'll get sympathy votes for sure.

I'm an avid Russ supporter but I don't see how you giving an MVP to a player on a team that's 7th in their conference.

Why not Kawhi? Actually plays both sides and has a better record than both.

Harden is easily this seasons MVP. How this is even a discussion with the media, is beyond me.

They're not going to give it to Westbrook who's carrying his team to the 7th seed.

When was the last time a player was given the MVP for being in the 7th seed?

Besides, the triple double is the most overrated stat in all of sports. They'd, essentially be given the MVP to Westbrook for averaging 1.5 more rebounds.
