What's Your Realistic Hope for 2017-18 PG Situation?

Post#1 » by ElectricMayhem » Thu Mar 2, 2017 7:44 am

I'm sure you've all concocted some surefire way free up the cash to make us a player for elite PGs, but for right now let's place those ideas in the improbable box.

ASSUMING we match a near-max or max offer for KCP and
ASSUMING Reggie's contract is not considered an asset or perhaps even neutral value by the rest of the league....

What is your realistic hope for next year's PG situation?

Let Reggie rest in the offseason and hope he gets his burst back. Roll with Reggie/Ish?
Ship Reggie out for whatever we can get. Roll with Ish/Beno or whatever other cheap vet we can get?
Ship Reggie out and draft a mid-1st PG. Ish/Beno/Rookie or Ish/Rookie?
Keep Reggie but start Ish and give Reggie backup minutes?
Cut Reggie and send his checks out along with Josh Smith's?

Hope someone else wants Reggie, trade him for whatever we can even if it's an expiring. Draft a PG, this draft has a shipload of elite talent at point. We won't land a superstar, but hopefully a nba starter for the future. Play Ish with his team ball style and have the rook get some valuable time with the bench unit that can ease him into the nba game

Consult the medical team about RJs injury and let the experts determine if it can be fixed, managed or not.

Scenario A: it can be fixed

Sit RJ down and explain what this team needs from it's PG. If he's not on board I ship him for whatever I can get

If he's on board he stays

Scenario B: it can be managed.

Sit RJ down and explain his situation and what we need from him moving forward. If he's not on board I ship him for whatever I can get

If he's on board it's a 50/50 call on moving him on

Scenario C: he's done

We sit down and discuss long term quality of life, try to go the medical retirement route. If he's on board he stays and I'd probably look at some kind of job in the organization for a while

If he's not on board I ship him for whatever I can get
In conjunction with all of that I get SJ, Tobias & KCP to work on shooting & handles all off season because from where I sit now RJ ain't gonna be on board with anything that doesn't involve him calling his own number constantly

Worst case scenario I return in October to RJ being a bum off the bench, causing drama while Ish, Mid first Rookie G, SJ, KCP & Tobias handle the ball

Best case scenario I keel RJ, he plays the right way and 10 years from now he pulled a Billups!

Most likely scenario: I return in October without RJ

I havent paid any attention to the draft candidates, but if theres a legit pg available to draft we need to grab him.
Its going to be hard to trade reggie for fair value let alone a replacement PG, so we might have to keep him and limit his minutes. Develop hypothetical drafted PG and hope reggie improves his value.
Hopefully a full offseason helps reggie get back to full strength

Your worst-case scenario for trading Reggie is close to my best-case scenario. If a team allows us a do-over on Reggie essentially giving us an expiring or a 2nd rounder that will never come to fruition then I think that's close to the best offer we will get. But I think it is also possible that we won't get such a deal and that we make have to take back someone else's unwanted contract, albeit probably a smaller one.

I'd wouldn't mind us rolling out Ish/Beno (or similar low-priced vet)/Rookie next year. Let the rook learn the ropes from a couple good team-oriented vets.

Also, you mentioned the point guard talent in this draft. That's true, but it doesn't seem to fall in our range. I don't know that much about the prospects myself, but nbadraft.net has 5 of the top 9 picks being point guards but then no more picked until the second round.

I have the same hope I've had since February, 2015:

That SVG will stop pretending that RJ is a point guard, and either use him as a 6th man off the bench or trade him. That's assuming he's healthy.

If he's not healthy and can't drive, then you might have to just move on from him. He doesn't do the other things well enough.

I voted for Ish/Rookie and then I went to check the current mock drafts. Unfortunately we are like the 16th projected pick and De'Aaron Fox is the last of "top pgs" at #10 and then there's not another one listed until Jawun Evans at #25. That's a big gap and we're in the dead zone :/. Unless we end up falling out of the playoffs and somehow get gifted a top3 pick I imagine we're pretty much **** in the PG department.

I think people are looking at the PG situation the wrong way.

IF we agree that KCP & Tobias need to be the focus offensively then we don't need a John Wall scoring type of PG - we need a dude that can shoot the 3 & create off the bounce

IF we're gonna put the ball in KCP & Harris' hands more then our PG isn't gonna be pounding the rock, running PnR after PnR or calling his own number cause he won't have the opportunity!

OR you get a dude like Ish and play that way for 48

But I don't see us looking to get a Wall kind of PG - I believe the organization is choosing KCP over RJ this off-season

Got another different way to look at it:

RJ is best buddy's with Dre AND PG13, yeah?

IF you're Magic Johnson & you're looking to make a impact as quickly as possible...

Do you ring SVG and offer Deng (or Mozgov) & #3 for RJ & 2 firsts?

RJ then recruits PG13 to play with him, Ingram, Randle, Clarkson & Russ

Approx 12 months later Magic could call on SVG again...this time offering Russ & Randle for Dre

Dre, PG13, Ingram, Clarkson, RJ...

Mmmm too many JDs

get rid of RJ for an expiring and sign Milos Teodosic.
