I had a grin of devious pride when I sent that. I also looked at his numbers afterward and was a little bit impressed.
I never totally blamed him for those NFC Championship letdowns. Only game they weren't really in was the Eagles game. The Niners game... what can you say? Joe effin' Montana overcame 6 damn turnovers!
And after rewatching the 1982 game between the Cowboys and Redskins, I remember why I hated Rod Hill. I hate him again. He was the epitome of what Jimmy Johnson said years later... "Kick me in the head if I ever draft another dumb football player".
Amen to that. People still don't realize that once you reach the NFL level, being smart makes you faster than running fast. Reading, recognition and reaction from the ability to prepare better and utilize information quickly is something I would love to be able to quantify as it relates to a guy's 40 time. Belichick hasn't buttered his bread with ovepaid, physically gifted idiots, that's for sure.
So yeah, is there really any shame in not being quite as good as Roger Staubach? No. The window on the Cowboys was starting to close just as the Niners and Redskins and a little later the Giants was opening. Dynasties end. Danny White was a big reason it at least lasted a few years longer.
