How'd Silva look?

Brunson didn't give Silva a lot to work with as a counter puncher. When Silva did open up, he looked scary but it was few and far between. The stats are misleading though, it was a close fight in my eyes even with the striking discrepancy. Brunson was too timid and Silva took more strikes but pushed the action pretty much the entire time.

My usual event reviews are gonna turn up in my sig from here on out, here's the silva/brunson excerpt

Following the theme of lackluster fights, Silva and Brunson was marked mainly by tentativeness. Brunson, fresh off taking a KO from his sloppy striking in the Whitaker fight, seemed completely unwilling to engage. This meant opportunities for big exchanges were limited. Brunson’s caution paid off as he outstruck Silva, but the excitement came predominantly when the Spider pushed the pace periodically. From a perspective of landing strikes, it feels impossible to argue that Brunson didn’t win the fight. Where Silva did manage to have an impact however was octagon control. Silva was consistently standing his ground or forcing Brunson to give way during aggressive flurries which swayed the judges. Silva won the fight 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 in spite of being outlanded 118-54 and being taken down twice. Silva did stuff 9 takedowns however and Brunson’s unwillingness to take risks cost him the decision. Brunson’s claim that he “outclassed” Anderson Silva is a stretch, but he did do enough to warrant a close decision and gave Dana White the opportunity to drop one of his favorite phrases “don’t leave the fight in the hands of the judges.” This fight did little to improve the stock of either fighter, but seeing Silva walk away with his first official win in years was a nice consolation. The man is arguably the GOAT and controversial decision or not, seeing his joy in victory was a nice moment.

I have not believed this fight could happen and I'm still skeptical but it's gaining steam...I've yet to really sit back and think of all the potential implications.

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has reportedly agreed to terms on a new contract with the promotion.

St-Pierre (25-2 MMA, 19-2 UFC) could return to the octagon in the third quarter of this year, though no date has been finalized, per MMAFighting.com.

I've got no love for bringing back older fighters after long layoffs, probably gonna write about it after Fedor fights Mitrione in depth. GSP has some hope in that he's not super old but the ever evolving sport won't wait for dude. Hoping for the best, worried that this will be another star hurting his legacy instead of helping.

Didn't have too much to recap off the events this weekend but it's an excuse to up the thread:
- Fedor vs Mitrione got scrapped last minute (like three hours before the event late)

- Josh Thomson was rusty and got KO'ed by Pitbull which ruined the most intriguing title fight in any division imo (Thompson vs Chandler) for Bellator.

- Derrick Lewis has a star personality and is a throwback fighter. He's competent enough to force the fight onto it's feet and he overwhelms with KO power and force. He's like a new age Liddell almost. Calling out Browne's domestic violence accusations, claiming body shots didn't hurt he just had to drop a deuce and then having a fake plastic interim title were all stand out moments for the character of dude too.

- Hendricks looked solid at 185 but he's so much smaller than everyone that I don't have any faith.

- Firas Zahabi's little brother fought and looked like a solid, promising fighter. His ground game was nice.

- Randa Markos anti-bullying message after beating Carla Esparza who bullied her throughout TUF was epic and my favorite moment of the event.

I'm pretty vehemently opposed to bringing back aging fighters after long lay offs and throwing them to the wolves. GSP was great and stays in shape so maybe this one holds up better but I'm not happy about it. He's a WW legend not MW and he's skipping Gegard, Jacare and Romero in line plus the fight isn't until the second half of the year. Add that it's taking steam away from the news about UFC 209 which is easily the best card so far this year and I'm just shaking my head hard.

This is so stupid. I can't wait till michael bisbing loses his title. Furst he fights 43 year old hendo then they give him 3 year layoff GSP.

What abotu the REAL contenders that dedicated their life to that belt?? They just get put on the shelf like nobodies.

OT: Any MMA/UFC Cyborg fans?

Post#227 » by Villalona » Wed Mar 1, 2017 10:31 pm

If your a big UFC fan, I recommend listening to Episode 18 of a show called unfiltered sports talk.

http://www.revolverpodcasts.com/shows/unfiltered-sports-talk-is-cristian/

They interview Cris Cyborg and she gives a lot of info.

Some of the things she said:

- I think Floyd wins and dominates vs Connor. MMA training is not the same as Boxing.
- I've never trained pro-wrestling, I would like to try one day. I'm not a good actress, but I am a fighter.
- I would like boxing one day. Its not about $ I've trained for everything. Conor opened the door
- I don't choose my opponents for fights but someone I really like to fight is Marloes Coenen. She's complete.
- Ronda Rousey runs from me bc she is scared to lose. I would still FIGHT her, she's done a lot but she has to win some fights

To this day, I still believe she is the best in her sport. Even when Rousey was on top.

I mean the USADA stuff tainted her image a little bit even though it was for a diuretic but I always thought she'd have knocked the sh*t out of Ronda back when that was the fight everyone wanted to see. Now I'm sure of it. Deep down inside I think Ronda always knew she wasn't as good as she was hyped up to be and she definitely knew that Cyborg would have hurt her badly.

Marloes Coenen comment is interesting because of the Bellator connection there. Sounds interesting, I'll check it out. Gonna fold this into the MMA discussion thread where it may get some more looks from the handful of MMA fans on the boards.

UFC 209 preview
https://fteswl.com/2017/03/01/ufc-209-preview/

Here's the bits from the more low key fights I'm most hype for, this is gonna be one of the best cards of the year squad.

Lando Vannata vs David Teymur: Lando Vannata had arguably the most spectacular KO of 2016 over John Makdessi, but it was his short notice loss to Tony Ferguson that probably did even more for his hype train. Ferguson will fight for the interim lightweight title, but Vannata on very short notice was able to hurt El Cucuy and put on an epic show. That speaks to the quality of Vannata’s striking and skillset as a whole. He’s a mix of unorthodox movements and precision that makes him a huge threat and exciting prospect in the most competitive division the UFC has. David Teymur meanwhile is anything but unorthodox. His Muay Thai base makes him a disciplined technical striker who has looked very impressive in his first two UFC bouts. This is a striker vs striker match-up that many look at as a continuation of Groovy Lando’s rise through the division but Teymur is just the type to accept the challenge and make it a real test. This is the sleeper to win fight of the night in my book and while I picture Vannata winning, I also expect this fight to be competitive and full of fireworks.

Iuri Alcantara vs Luke Sanders: Luke Sanders is a fighter to watch. His work outside of the UFC shows a tough grinder who is comfortable striking in the pocket to open up take down opportunities and submission chances from the ground. It’s no surprise that after just one UFC bout he gets a ranked opponent in Alcantara. Similar to Elkins, Alcantara’s losses are limited to high level opponents but I think Sanders fits that bill. This one is worth tuning in early for.

Tyson Pedro vs Paul Craig: Paul Craig’s debut was a lot of fun to watch, displaying toughness and some slick ground work. Pedro also showed slick grappling but everyone who takes Khalil Rountree down looks like a BJJ ace. These are two undefeated LHW’s and even though they meet up on Fight Pass, I’ve decided to add them to this preview because the division needs new talent and Craig’s debut was a seriously entertaining bout.

Same here. Will just watch the main even on a stream. I am extremely disappointing at this and it happens way too often.

So Bellator tn lost it's co-main over weight cut and now so did UFC 209, except Khabib vs Ferguson was the biggest fight on the card. The IV ban is dumb as hell. The PPV is still a good card though, especially if Ferguson vs Johnson 2 becomes a last minute replacement. Michael Johnson beat Tony pretty convincingly when they met a long time ago, but Ferguson is much improved since then. It's a decent make-up bout. I had Lando vs Teymur as the sleeper to be FotN, Mark Hunt vs Overeem is a full on strikers fight and Woodley/Thompson was a fight of the night in MSG. So it's still a good card even if Ferguson doesn't get a replacement.

Recorded this before the fight got scrapped obviously, but I jumped on FTESWL as a podcast guest to talk MMA news and specifically this card. Had some issues and took a while to get into a good rhythm (first time doin' this), but it was pretty cool and I hope to try the podcast thing again...got a realgm shout out in at the end too.

Do yourselves a favor and tune in when Vannata and Teymur fight. Those two are high level strikers and I think Vannata has a shot to be a champ some day.

And shout out to the Luke Sanders/Alcantara fight for anyone watching. Sanders landed something like 100 blows to the head and Iuri pulled off the hail mary knee bar.

no way, woodley just coasted most of the fight. both fighters nullified the other because of their unique skillsets, but woodley had one takedown and one sorta knockdown (wonderboy lost his footing while falling back). Thats around 3 minutes of dominance over the course of 25.

Either way this fight leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth and neither fighter is coming away from tonight looking good.

wake me up when Conor fights.
