What hurts the NBA is that great games aren't on national TV

Post#1 » by Shock Defeat » Tue Mar 7, 2017 4:09 am

Look at tonight for example. There was a heavyweight fight between the Spurs/Rockets, easily one of the best games of the year, being played but on TNT there was the Pacers vs. Hornets...wait what?

I understand that there can't be national TV games every night, but there are many times where TNT or ESPN show a crap game on the same night that there is a interesting, compelling, or high-stakes game being played. If the NBA wants to get as popular as the NFL, they need to make it a priority to show the games that people want to see. If I were a casual fan just flipping channels tonight, I would look at the Pacers/Hornets game and I would not tune in. Now, if the Spurs/Rockets game was on instead, you bet I'd stay on that channel.

It's not like there is no time to adjust and rebook travel for the production crew. 2 weeks ago you can easily circle the Rockets/Spurs game and say that you want to broadcast that game on your network. That's more than enough time to get the logistics ironed out.

Agreed, it was insane not to have this game on national tv. I almost always tune into western conference games, the eastern ones simply dont have the same overall talent as their western counterparts, the playoffs in the east are full of parity but low quality of play in comparison to the west. IND/CHA over HOU/SA? Ridiculous.

I'm assuming today's Houston vs. San Antonio game couldn't be flexed because ESPN and TNT double headers run in 2 hour 30 minute blocks
Hence 8:00 Charlotte game leads to 10:30 Los Angeles game (times in EST)
Today's Houston game was at 8:30 which would throw the balance out of whack ending at 11(no Western games are played at 11:00 EST or 8:00 PST to my knowledge).

Yup I agree. I don't know why they don't just substitute for the good teams. I used to get out work late to catch the 10:30 games and the Lakers was ALWAYS playing on the national televised games, even sometimes now. Ruined my night.

The regular season of the NBA will never be as popular as the NFL

16 games > 82 games

There isn't anything the NBA can do but hype up the playoffs

Hurt that these Western Conference games don't end till 1am on the east coast. Not a lot of incentive to watch them either when all the guys talk about his how soft the players are and how much better it was in their day, kind of makes it feel meaningless.

There's probably an annoying amount of paperwork that has to be done. Each televised game is tens of millions of dollars being moved. Individual teams, advertisers, the NBA, TNT, etc all probably have to agree and new contracts have to be written up.

Not saying it can't be done, but it's probably really annoying and hard to do on the fly during the season.

They can flex games easily. They flexed magic and heat to cavs Hawks. Last Friday espn They flexed knick and Raptors to bucks and cavs last week. TNT monday

It was obvious Hornets pacers was gonna be trash and 2nd and 3rd seed in west was gonna be awesome

If it was that easy I feel like they would've done it.

I made a thread a couple of days ago talking talking about how much the Knicks and Lakers are on. It's ridiculous

Heat's win vs Cavs should have been on National TV last night.

Better games would likely mean more money for everyone so it's obviously not a simple thing or it would already be done.

I think what's ridiculous about all of it is the insane amount of times the Clippers and Bulls are on TV. According to http://fansided.com/2016/08/13/nba-schedule-2016-every-team-national-games/, they have 34 each. That's more than the Spurs and tied with Cleveland. I just don't get it. The Bulls just aren't good at all and the Clippers aren't exactly great either. I get that they are both big markets, but its just too much.

The Bulls are the team in the biggest city that only has 1 NBA team, but I can tell you as a Bulls fan it's been hard to watch some games this year. We're not good, our offense is clogged, and everyone outside of Jimmy Butler disappoints.

The Clippers I can understand since this may be the last year that group is together and Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are compelling players, but yeah, I agree that the Cavs and Spurs should have more games. In any case, the Clippers being on TV isn't as bad as the Lakers or Knicks.

Plenty of people watch TV still... pretty much the vast majority of males have TV just to watch their Sports. Not everybody is into the whole android box craze.
