It isn't a discount. It's being compensated for the risk of an early extension for a player with a history of health issues.

If Embiid gets another injury on his foot he's likely done and even if he decides he wants to come back he won't get close to max money. It kind of reminds me of an argument I got with a coworker who was a Ravens fan awhile back. He wanted to resign Pitta.

I said why. Why not franchise him and let him prove he was healthy. He's asking for AAV of around 7 million the franchise tag was something like 8 at the time. Well Ozzie went and resigned Pitta. Then he got injured again same hip and was out for two years uncuttable due to the bonus figures of his deal.

Now at least in the NBA if a player can't play medically they won't be charged cap wise but they'll still likely fiddle with him for a couple of years before getting to that point. So no I'm not in favor of extending Embiid coming off a major injury. We don't need to and there is literally zero reason to not wait a year. Unless he signs for less then max money.

I doubt it man. If they are, it's not too encouraging to me, because I wouldn't consider that very bright.

Shaq has said he had no desire to leave Orl until they didn't offer the max. Pat Williams and Gabriel admitted they screwed that up. Today Max contacts are given out like candy. Embiid will be given a max contract and we have to live with the risk. We are all in on jo and giving him a max is what that means. If JoJo didn't have that risk he wouldn't be in Philly.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there was a "max" contract back then? MJ made more money than the salary cap in 1998.

You're correct. Max salary was put in place in 1999 largely because MJ had the Bulls over a barrel.

Every player in the nba should be paid on a per game basis, they can
make as much money as they can but you have to show up and play
that would fix a lot of todays problems.

Neither owners nor players want to do that.

You missed that that was the 2nd and far less important reason for him leaving. The most important was that there was no RFA rules that year, so someone at the end of their rookie contract could take off and go anywhere if they wanted to. That's long gone now, so seems like you're yelling into the wind.

well, the main reason was he wanted to leave. i'm hoping Embiid wants to stay.

What are you missing here? The main reason--the thing that made it possible for Shaq to leave--was that the rules allowed him to go anywhere he wanted to, and a related reason was that the owner refused to match his contract. Neither of those are remotely close to being on the table now--RFA is in place, and the Sixers will happily max Embiid. So Shaq is not a useful or relevant point of reference.

? that's all i'm saying. max Embiid. happily. the idea of trying to save bucks on extending Embiid while making him sweat it out don't make no sense, no matter the current bureaucracy. you don't want your star looking for a way out.

I know the new CBA has scrapped the amnesty clause, but are there any provisions to allow a team to waive a high salaried player if he spends significant time off court due to injury?

Starting to think this guy is Greg Oden 2.0. If next year is like this year (which I expect) it's time to move on and build around Simmons and Saric. It's just a cloud hanging over this franchise.

I mean, it's still the same injury and this shouldn't be a cause more frustration, imo. Obviously he was going to consult more doctors and I'd prefer that he goes away from the team to do that, tbh.
