Knicks Committed To Trading Carmelo Anthony In Offseason

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Mar 20, 2017 8:24 pm

The New York Knicks are committed to trading away Carmelo Anthony in the summer.

The Knicks explored trade scenarios involving Anthony leading up to the deadline.

Anthony has a full no-trade clause, which means he would have to formally approve any trade.

The Los Angeles Clippers privately expressed confidence they could trade for Anthony in the offseason.

With the Knicks struggling over the past few seasons, they would like to rebuild entirely around Kristaps Porzingis.

Long term this is the right move but it only makes sense if they get something reasonable in return.
Its one thing to salary dump an average player, its a whole different level to salary dump your star player.
So the big question really is what are teams willing to offer in exchange for Melo?
And what kind of deal is going to be fair for both teams?

With a re-signed Blake and Paul and a full training camp going into the season with Melo they would have to be considered title contenders because the Clippers are lacking that Rudy Gay or Carmelo Anthony at the small forward position to be in the convo with Golden State,Cleveland,San Antonio, and Houston. New York needs to figure out a way to draft Fox and pick up PJ Tucker over the summer to play the 3 in place of Melo.

The Knicks can commit to it all they want but Melo still has a no-trade clause thanks to Phil.

New York is just looking to dump this albatross and move on. Finding a team that will accept him wlll be tough enough with his huge salary and since he will have overall approval in the end, it might be close to impossible. Outside of the Clippers trading for him or the Cavs figuring out a way to bring him in salary wise, I don't see many good options for anyone. Getting good value is in the aggregate with Melo, it is addition by subtraction. Simply having him gone for little value is fine since the money can be spent on players that will buy into a process and try to play defense and they will be out of Melo's chokehold.

The Clippers would be better off with Tucker than Melo. His effort and defense are embarrassing. Maybe he would try in LA, but what does that tell you?
