I'm wondering what Boston will do with all of their PGs if they draft Fultz or Ball.
If our pick is in the 9-12 range would you trade our pick for Bledsoe and both Suns 2nd rounders?

As far as Mudiay, I'm not sure he would fit our system well....Rick needs a scorer at PG but I could see that as a possible opportunity.
Rubio would certainly be available too but I don't see Rick making him work in his system for the same reasons a Mudiay.

Let's face it, there is a good possibility Yogi will be the best we can do at PG next season. I think he'll be a great backup for us and there is certainly some upside but I don't see him ever developing into a true starting PG in this league.

Barnes shouldn't be playing the 4 period, he is terrible on the glass and provides little defensive impact

Although I completely agree I don't think the coaching staff shares our view.

Wonder if Suns would trade Bledsoe and their 2017 2nd rounder for our 2018 pick?

Bledsoe/Curry/Barnes/Markkanen/Noel would be a nice lineup for several years and add Dirk/Matthews/JJ/Yogi/DFS/Mejri/Brussino to that group and I think we could be a decent PO team next season.

We made a similar trade with the Suns when we got Nash although our pick turned out to be Marion but it worked out for both teams pretty well.

You have a point there; but too, you have to remember there have been a lot of players come through the NBA with that same style and just couldn't make the cut. They will most certainly have to work hard to meet that potential.

One of the intriguing things about drafting Markkanen would be having Dirk (and Holger) as a mentor to work with him at least the last year or two that Dirk is on the team (and hopefully after).
Lauri would definitely have to have the work ethic to become a great player and assert himself into a large role. You are correct that always doesn't happen and one of the main concerns I have about rebuilding through the draft.

Rebuilding through the draft is definitely a crap shoot. Before this season I wasn't too sure this front office was capable of rebuilding through the draft. After what they've done this year though with turning over the roster, I have faith they will find the right player with their pick this year.

Question though... is there a young player (1st or 2nd year) in the NBA right now that you would be willing to trade our top pick for? What if Denver offers up Emmanuel Mudiay?

All the players that are realistic (Rubio, Bledsoe, Mudiay, etc) are not worth a top 10 pick in this draft. You can legitimately make the case that there are 6-7 players that have All-Star potential / will get there amongst the top 10. It's up to the coaching staff to figure out which players have the most and then develop. Dallas should be underdogs in 7 of the next 9 games, which puts us to the last week of the season where we still play Phoenix, Denver and the Grizz. With some luck, Dallas could be picking in the top 7.

Unless Dallas is picking outside the top 10, there is no way you give up the pick in this draft. And even then, I'm VERY against trading it for some of the players that have been pegged as available.

Call me crazy but I think Markkenen's ultimately a 5. If he had say Bender's agility then he could be a 4.

One of.....Fultz, Ball, Jackson, Smith, Fox, Markkanen, Tatum, Isaac, Monk, Ntilikina....should be ours. If none are available when we pick I'd seriously consider trading down or move our pick for a somewhat proven young player like Bledsoe.
After those 10 we're looking at Allen, Patton, Collins, Leaf, Hartenstein, Williams, Adebayo and Bridges. Most of those could easily be career role players so if we can trade for a legit proven starter like Bledsoe we have to do it.

I see Markkanen as a Dirk 5.
A rotation of Barnes/Noel/Markkanen at the 4/5 would probably be a dream for Carlisle.
I'm not saying Markkanen would be my preference but I could see the Mavs salivating at the opportunity to draft him and groom him into Dirks role.

I could see our choice be between Ntilikina and Markkanen when we pick and of the two I think I'd rather have Markkanen.
If Isaac and/or Smith slip to us then I take one of them before Ntilikina or Markkanen.

The future of the NBA will be 5 guys all 5'8" to 6'2" standing behind the 3pt line shooting.

Nah. In the future they will stand behind half court chucking shots that are worth 5.

Shooting at all 5 positions will be a premium, but they will be taller. Wing sized players who can switch around.

10. Dallas: PG Frank Ntilikina
International
Age: 18
Ht./Wt.: 6-5/170
Strasbourg (France)

The Mavs need to start thinking about long-term guard prospects. Ntilikina plays the brand of unselfish, intelligent basketball that coach Rick Carlisle likes and projects as a multi-positional defender.

Not thrilled about Frank at all but we shall see. I doubt he would get more minutes than Devin or Barea.

Looks like we can definetely cancel out getting into the bottom 8 record-wise. Minny (sitting at 28 wins) still plays the Lakers three more times and SAC once, but we're not gonna go ice cold over the last eleven games (we'll play PHX, SAC, NO and a bunch of playoff-squads that might rest some guys down the stretch like SA/MEM).

Charlotte is still only one W ahead of us so I guess it's a very real possibility that we fall further in the pick-standings. I doubt the Pels can catch us, their schedule is really hard to finish out the year even given that they've looked improved as of late and had a few quality wins.

Man, to think for how long we've been down there even in the top 5 pick-range, just to see where this has gone now super-late in the season :(

I think we'll end up with #11 or #12. There are still some nice prospects in that range, but the likelyhood of getting somebody like Dennis Smith is pretty much zero I'd imagine.

They would have to find a way to trade up if they want to pick in the top 8. Not impossible but very unlikely.

If we finish 10th, what are the chances we actually can get the 8th or 9th pick? All things considered, I'm hoping we could land one of Dennis Smith, Lauri Markkanen or Jonathon Isaac, which would mean we would need to get, at least, the 9th pick based on the expected draft order. Anyone know how that works?

I think (and I could be mistaken) we either move into the top 3 or we are stuck at the spot in relation to our record

i.e. If we end up with the 10th worst record and the 9th worst team gets drawn instead of us, we are automatically guaranteed to be in top 3. Not sure on the specifics though... just basing this on what I've seen on 2k lol

He's very good and I could see him as an all-star caliber player, but I don't think he is a franchise talent by any means. I have Tatum, Jackson, and Fultz rated higher... doesn't matter though- he's a guarantee to be a Laker at the #2 pick... Not sure how they're gonna do Russell, Clarkson, and Ball though

Return to Dallas Mavericks
