I dont think so - but this is simply because Bolt's talent doesn't lie on his take off speed but rather his ability to still accelerate as he gets to 70-80 yards - which doesn't actually make Bolt the best reference point to figure out which track athlete could have a better 40 time.

If i was an NFL official, or media member at the combine, just for fun, i would ask the top 10 guys if they would want to run 100 meter and get the time, and give them starting blocks and a track, and see if anybody could get 9.6

This would be great click bait if they posted it online.

just about every NFL player (at the skill positions at least) most likely ran track at some point in their lifetime. I dont get why they dont do more measurements in pads though

let me see you run a 40 with full pads on and you have to get around a guy at the line of scrimmage

much more relevant 40 time IMO

Bumpin. Yes? Of course he can!

His start IS good. His reaction time is what's inconsistent. His best races include fast drive phases. It's relative. World class sprinters train as sprinters. Put the fast 40 guy at the combine against the 100m finalists in a 40yard race and he gets smoked.

You guys need to realize there id a difference between fast football sprinters and world class sprinters.

Bolt's best 100m breakdown...

4.62 after 40 meters

Convert that to yards, and subtract reaction time and Bolt would definitely run 4.2 at worst.

Another olympic sprinter beat John Ross' 40 yard time and said Ross wouldn't beat bolt over that distance.

You guys, world class sprinters are on a different tier of acceleration and speed, let's not be ignorant.

Yes, the fastest sprinter in history would beat.any football player over 40 yards lolololol

You hit the nail on the head with the reaction times. Sprinters are electronically timed out of the gates while most 40s are hand timed which means there's typically a .2 sec cushion or so on those NFL 40 times since they are waiting for movement to hit the stop watch.

Also keep in mind, that 2 of the legit fastest guys who played in the NFL recently were Ted Ginn JR and Jamal Charles. Both of those dudes were also super legit in track (Ginn arguably could have been better at that than football), and even still those guys don't don't hold a candle to the truly elite 100m guys.
