Questions Questions
In hindsight was letting Monroe walk a good idea? At the time Dre had no low post skills. Did letting Monroe walk help or hurt the team in the near term? Would you prefer to have dre and his 200 mil contract or Monroe on a much more reasonable deal Would it have been better to resign Monroe allowing dre to get some seasoning and later trade Monroe? How would you grade svg on that move?

Re: Questions Questions
No, because you're not building a team around Monroe at center either regardless of the money. Greg is probably getting a pretty nice deal this summer so the difference in contracts won't be quite as vast although Andre is obviously still going to be making more.
Letting Monroe walk and getting Drummond starting on his own as the lone big was the right move anyways. Spacing had to improve and that wasn't going to happen with Greg masquerading as a power forward.
I don't think Drummond would be any better off in regards to developed post moves by now even if Monroe was kept around for another season or two. It's not like Andre was going to absorb the nuances from Greg of post play via osmosis. That's on the coaches.

The big mistake was not trading Monroe when we had a chance.

^On top of that, I think another big mistake was not developing Dre as a face up and midrange shooting capable player.
All he does nowadays is just backdown some guy terribly and throw up a dumb hookshot. That's not winning basketball these days.

This.
Realistically, as soon as Drummond showed the type of player he was going to be Monroe should have been shopped. There was no way the pairing would work in today's NBA.

Re: Questions Questions
what do you guys think Monroe could've gotten us in a trade?

There were always Harrison Barnes for Monroe rumors popping up. At the very least a late lottery pick.
Hindsight being 20/20 we could have traded him for Jennings, kept Middleton, traded Knight for the Lakers pick from Phoenix he was traded for anyway and had a team that almost makes sense with Drummond / Smith / Middleton / KCP / Jennings + the Lakers pick if it's outside of the top 3 this year.

Re: Questions Questions
OKC traded Harden for Kevin freaking Martin so I would bet if we'd have offered them Monroe, Harden would be a Piston nowadays.

Now that's some interesting revisionist history.
We took Drummond in the 2012 draft, Knight in 2011, Monroe in 2010. We did the awful Maggette - Ben Gordon trade in June 2012. Hypothetically if Joe had a little foresight, we could have offered Monroe / Knight / Jerebko / 2 1sts for Harden (the Thunder took Lamb / Martin / 2 1sts from the Rockets) and moved forward with a Harden / Drummond / Middleton core.
Fast forward to 2014, Stan takes over the team, his first FA target was Isaiah Thomas. So in some bizarro world, our team could be:
Drummond
???
Middleton
Harden
IT

That team wouldn't work! Can't have Harden & IT in the same backcourt

Ehh, give me that team, I'll worry about that later. (But Harden - Middelton with IT off the bench would work pretty nicely...)

This. But, Greg had a no-trade clause his last year. Dumars wasn't going to trade him. So, he kind of got lost in the management change.

Re: Questions Questions
Knight paired with Harden would be looking right now like a very good player at the PG position (not a PG anyway)

Agree that the last year of his contract he couldn't be traded but it was the year before we could have gotten something for him.

The year before that I was screaming to move him for Kawhi Leonard, in hindsight we should have moved both guys.

But, I believe Dumars had every intention of signing him back. When SVG took over, that option was gone and he didn't negotiate with Monroe that summer.
