Since Zeller returned, teams are shooting 39.6% on open threes against the Hornets.

Lol are you learning anything or are you too determined with head-in-sand? See: Leonard, Kawhi and this gross thread of blaming Clifford for open shots resulting in > 35.6% conversion rates.

None of this is a "belief" system. James Johnson is a 30-year-old with a career 30% 3P average.

Getting back to Fantasy Land, you're gonna crowd this slasher cause he's "hot."

No, it's sort of like the process of repeating a task. It is only natural to get better as you see that same task again in a short period of time. The Hornets give up the most open 3s and players naturally curve upward as they see the same look over and over.

Jeez....Johnson saw a task for 8 years and converted just 30%. Conversely, Klay Thompson was a relative dumpster fire to begin the season.

You either get this or you refuse to get this. Pretty simple.

While they give up more "wide-open 3s", Charlotte gives up most wide-open + open 3s combined. And, there isn't a really big difference in the NBA.

Feels like that statement undermines your whole argument here. Compare ATL and NOP to us and we're talking a difference of like a single attempt per game. The point remains - you can give up a ton of 3PTAs and have an elite defense. This whole side conversation isn't even necessary because the base assumption of high # of open 3PTAs = bad defense is not true.

Miami's actual 3PT tracking data feels germane and further highlights it's not hand up or whatever cliche. Like FT's and RA paint attempts, the goal is avoiding them but if not don't compound matters by closing hard out of position and crowding relative non-shooters. To summarize....

- Miami was 5-8 (62.5%) on heavily contested 3FGA
- They were 16-32 (50%) on open 3FGA.
- 32 of 40 attempts were open (80% ~ league average).

Miami 3FGA by Defender Distance
0-2 ft very tight: 1-2 (50%)
2-4 ft tight: 4-6 (66.7%)
4-6 ft open: 7-18 (38.9%)
6+ ft wide open: 9-14 (64.3%)
