who's the ump? is that Jerry Layne? he has been terrible tonight with the edges, especially that 7th inning 3 pitch strike out to I think Seager. that second strike was at least 6 inches off the base if not a foot away.

hey the first hit for Barnes this season is a blooper triple!

You don't think he can be an elite hitter?

not that, but I don't think he can be a healthy hitter. his short career has been marred from injuries stemming from either hitting and running on bases or playing outfield. his pitching career has very little injuries to this date. I think if he insist on being a two way player, his batter side of bodily issues will come into be a negative factor through out his career. the guy gets hurt running out flyballs and turns his ankles while running the bases. now he is pulling his hammys on routine plays.

I want to see him pitch every 5th day a hell of a lot more than I would like to see him turn into the next Hideki Matsui.

Thanks for the cheap bouncer sports gods that puts Jay in scoring position.

Is there any data/ articles on putting a closer in in a non save situation?

I want to know if they perform better in save situations vs. when they're in non save situations or if that is a myth.

edit:
Anybody else surprised Alex Wood is hitting 95 on the gun?
That's unbelievable that this org has revitalized his arm.

I'm not aware of any reference material to support either case, but it does seem like Kenley himself seems more focused and effective when the stakes are higher in save situations than when it is a non-save situation.

Wood hitting 95 mph is not really a surprise as we suspected that he was capable of such velocity in shorter spurts as a reliever. He didn't even last 5 innings in yesterday's outing. Maybe he wanted to impress to stay in the rotation and was going all out instead of game-planning to pitch more innings by being more conservative in lowering his velocity for the sake of more innings.

Wood's Mechanical Adjustment Led to Uptick in Velocity

It looks like I was mistaken. I forgot that Wood was bordering on low 90's to high 80's with his fastball before, so a spike of 5 mph would not typically be explained as going from starter to reliever. Apparently, he's worked on his mechanics since 2013 but there are concerns that he could regress to his former form and that MLB is changing the way it is measuring how velocity is tracked this year, which is leading to higher readings than in the past. Plus, Wood still needs to prove he can last longer than going through the batting order twice around. However, it's good to remember that there was a 30-day stretch where Wood had a higher strikeout rate than both Scherzer and Strasburg trailing only Kershaw and Fernandez before he got hurt last season.

i don't think Wood or Maeda can be a long term solution as starters. they both do well the first time around the line up, start getting hit by the second, then they roll over and give away games the third time around. once Baez is back, I think we are better off bringing up Urias now to start 4 to 5 innings in the bigs rather than waste his innings in the minors, with a full understanding that once Hill is healthy as well as all other starter not being hurt, pair Maeda and Wood together every 5th start, each going only twice against the opposing team.

Maeda may eventually get out of this funk, but Alex won't. and I have a strong suspicion about Maeda. once we sign Otani, Maeda should be a long relief, or if he wishes to maximize his contract, trade him to a team like the Pirates.

Hopefully McCarthy stays healthy and can give us some innings. Ryu is a question mark.
I fear we're going to have to do the bullpen the way we did last season. Rich Hill is injured and because of his age and injury history, we typically keep him at around 6 IP. Remember he pitched 7 innings of perfect baseball and was pulled with 89 pitches in Miami last year. Urias will be on a pitch count more than likely and he will be closely monitored.

Kershaw is our workhorse but I think we need another starter to get deeper into games and give us 200 IP.
I DO NOT CARE that Maeda and Wood aren't those type of pitchers. That's what the back half of the rotation is for and I think there's merit to the Bill James school of a SP going 5 innings and going with the bullpen after that. But for the time being, I think we need another workhorse. That's why I brought up Quintana.

Or we can just wait and develop Urias until he is that arm.

I don't doubt why you would question Ryu and not MCarthy, but I do know one thing about that fat boy. he's got guts and he is honest. he can be arrogant too, but he is smart. did you know that he refused to sign his contract with us when it was down to the last 60 seconds to the deadline? he made sure he had the right to refusal of getting send down to the minors, otherwise he was willing to go back for a lot less, even after the dodgers committed the posting fee to the Hanhwa Eagles, even after his press conference in South Korea how he planned to play in US to test his talent, he gambled with little leveragel he's got down to the last seconds to get what he wanted. he also has always been open about playing with pain since his Tommy John from Highschool days and winning the ROY in KBO. he was looking worried and his interviews sounded like he was full of self doubt last season. this year, at least through Korean media outlet, he sounds as arrogant and confident as ever. I trust his intuition. what he showed me in Colorado was an excellent command and having his velocity back. our defense failed him in that game but still it was a very close game.

I don't know about another guy who can go 200 innings this season, but I think we can count on Ryu and McCarthy to combine together, to go past 350 innings and that is not too shabby.

GREAT WIN!

Grandal works well with our staff.
Love how he called Strip through that 12 pitch at bat.

Huge fan of this team and its make up. Could be my favorite one of the 2013-present era.

I don't question him. I just question whether his body will hold up (or if it's failing him) and I am (and have convinced myself) going to just operate as if he will get hurt so that if he makes it back, it will be a pleasant surprise.

We have the team for me to have this kind of attitude with him.

I'm doing the same thing with Rich Hill who should have never been given this 3 year $48 million deal. I'm not even sure we had competitors for his services and if they came anywhere close to this number.
But I'm expecting 100 IP or less from Rich Hill. I'm also expecting around 10 of those innings to be sucky because of rust coming off the DL.

If Rich shocks me and doesn't spend a huge chunk of the season on the DL, great. I'm not counting on it though.

#Dodgers and #Brewers remaining in contact on Ryan Braun, for whom 10/5 rights are fast approaching. My story: http://m.brewers.mlb.com/news/article/224009890/two-trade-deadlines-approaching-for-ryan-braun/ … @MLB

^^^^
I brought him up last year and you guys were patently against it. I am all for this if we can get the Brewers to cover half the money. I think we can for the right prospect.

Do it now so he has time to jell with the team and its coaches. No need to wait until August and force a fit.

I dunno man. Braun's contract doesn't run out until 2020 and has an option for 2021. he is only a couple of years younger than Andre.

I suppose this poison pill is manageable if the price is right. I would love to unload a contract like Kazmir's if I can pair him up with a couple of A ball or lower prospects... would hate to give up any of the Alvarez/Bellinger/Verdugo/Shefield/Buehler type of guys.

Kershaw vs. Greinke

Post#59 » by Ranma » Fri Apr 14, 2017 6:39 pm

I'm also still not down with Braun, especially if it costs premium prospects to get him. Much of my objection has to do with his previous PED suspension, but this organization believes in second chances and apparently he's been on his good behavior and even supposedly exhibiting leadership qualities. Like Neddy, I'm not a fan of the contract length and money commitment.

I see our inclination to go after a right-handed power bat, but the Brewers would have to eat quite a bit of his contract for me to even give it consideration. Plus, the most I would give up in prospects is Verdugo and Calhoun and even then I'd rather pursue other options.

In any case, I'm looking forward to tonight's pitching matchup.
