One might argue that it had nowhere to go but up considering the 3 leading ROY contenders are two players drafted in 2014 and a 2016 2nd round pick. This still looks like easily the worst draft class since 2000.

Indeed, according to NBA.com's Rookie Ladder standings Brogdon should win ROY. When was the last time a 10 PPG scorer won it ?

1951-52. The first year of the award. Jason Kidd and Mike Miller from the dreaded 2000 draft averaged 11 ppg each.

And a 2nd round pick hasn't won since 1961-62 which I believe is the only time it happened.

Actually it was the following year '62-'63 when Terry Dischinger won. He was the first pick of the second round in '62 and 8th overall. Jerry Lucas and Dave DeBusschere were territorial picks a policy long since discontinued.

Give this class more time and I don't think it'll look like a weak class. You have to give guys a few years these days - forget ROY.

One of the quieter rookies, Zipser, finished the season with 21 today.

If Buddy played like this with the Kings all season (if they could have drafted him), he would have been ROY easily

There's a lot of guys you could say this about though. Saric, Ingram, Chriss, Hermangomez, Ulis, labissiere all come to mind as players who improved significantly as the season progressed.

Exactly, it's not like he wasn't getting a good run with the Pels. It was natural progression, as with most of these guys.

there's two ways I'd go on this.

who deserves it on who's been contributing the most or who I'd rather have going forward into next season.

the former is clearly Brogdan, no one has helped his team as much and looks like a reliable, key rotation piece already.

the latter I'd say Jamal Murray, followed by Marquese Chriss and either Hield or Brown (Hield broke about and had a good 2nd half of the season, Brown looks like a super athletic, versatile starter down the line)

Interesting looks at the Kings rookies:

My take on this is that I was very surprised how the young guys stepped in and played after the trade, Georgios Papagiannis and especially Skal.

To answer your question, Obviously, I would take some more losses this season, because we end up 1 more loss away from the top 6 which would be a lot better than we are right now at the 8th spot, but I'm not gonna be sad about that. Biggest needs for this team coming into the draft is Point guard and small forward, we are stacked with shooting guards and big prospects.

And now the best thing, you know what makes me happy? That every young guy, month after month improved their numbers in almost every statistical category, I made this on excel, now I'm gonna go one by one.

Buddy Hield.

Image

He is shooting last two months from the three point line over 40% and he is not making 1 just per game, he is making over 2 threes per game last two months, that stands out for me that he is getting comfortable with his shot at the end of the season, another thing that stands out for me is that he CAN create his own shot against NBA talent. He could easily average in this league 20 points or more per game in the season, I don't know why he could not be our Damian Lillard who came out of college as a senior at age of 22/23? This is a great situation for him here in Sacramento, if he would be in Sacramento a little bit earlier in the season, then easily he could have won a rookie of the year! If he would be running for the ROY, the comeback win versus Clippers, where he hit two clutch threes in a row, would be a statement for him to get that award.
Dammit.... people have to realize, that he averages almost 10 more points in 10 more minutes while shooting 13 % better from the 3 point line and 2% better from the field if we compare his February and April stats, that is impressive. We have something special in him.

Skal Labissiere.
Image

The biggest surprise for me, that is 100%... Was like this :droop: when he got a playing time and showcased himself, did really coach Joerger did not saw this at the practice to not give him more burn at the first half of the season? I really think we hit a home run with this guy.
I don't see Skal as a big rebounder, but his touch on the offensive end and his defensive potential because of his length is something special. Every single month he was improving, his Points/Rebounds/FG% and even his 3PT FG %, he was not shooting it in February, but he was getting comfortable with the range and hit few three-pointers this season. Very impressive is Skal, I'm really excited about his future. Just gotta get stronger and everything will be alright.

Georgios Papagiannis.

Image

He played in only 3 games in February, but then he burst out with his performance in March and April, I love his toughness and especially I love that he can set some mean screens, this will be big summer for him, if he is a worker he can be a very useful player to this core going forward, because he has all the tools to be a successful NBA player, especially his touch in the post.
He was shooting this month 63% from the field :o And was averaging 9.2 points. I'm very excited!!!

Of course there is Malachi Richardson and Langston Galloway who I would loooove to keep on this team, unfortunately Malachi got injury, but he showed his touch from the perimeter versus Cavaliers @ Cleveland, so I'm for sure he can crack the rotation next season and be part of the core, just like Langston Galloway.

Is ROY announced today ?

How do you decide between the three leading candidates :

Embiid - 31 games played, most talented by a mile

Brogdon - 2nd rounder, no rookie of the month award, a role player - probably 5+ players will end better than him, main argument he is on a winning team - put him on the 76ers, this will not be the case

Saric - looking like the new favourite a month ago, but degraded later probably injured, low shooting numbers

Embiid. Generational.

Brogdon wont mind either way and Saric shown too little.

Based on the ballots that have been released so far, it looks like it'll be Brogdon or Embiid. What will hurt Embiid is all the people leaving him off their ballots entirely; the question will be how many people actually do that. But based on the publicized ballots so far, Brogdon is beating Embiid by a small margin.

I wonder if Ulis had averaged these April stats all year if he would have been in the running for rookie of the year, provided Embiid still only plays in 31 games.

From wiretap...

The 34th pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Ulis led all rookies with both 20.7 points and 6.8 assists per game in April; the last time a rookie averaged at least this many points and assists for a calendar month was Damian Lillard in March 2013. The 5-10 point guard also averaged 3.8 rebounds and posted shooting percentages of .485 on field goals, .370 on three-pointers and .783 on free throws. Ulis scored 20-plus points in four of his six games during the month, including the highest-scoring game by any NBA rookie for the entire season with a career-high 34 points against Houston on April 2. In a win against Dallas on April 9, Ulis tallied 20 points and 10 assists to record the only 20-point, 10-assist game by a rookie in the league this season.

If he averaged 21/7 you wonder if he would have been in the running?? He would have been the easy choice

Honestly wouldnt mind if the NBA just didnt even announce the winner this year and if someone asks them about it theyd just go "No I'm pretty sure we announced it, next question."

Lets be honest, there was no ROY this year. Embiid wouldve been the easy choice but 31 games isnt even close to enough games played.

What's Brogdon's ceiling? Pretty solid player out the gates.
