Van Gundy Quotes...
A lot of content to read through but it doesn't sound like a whole lot is going to change around the "core" of the team. Meaning Jackson and Drummond are probably going to be around. Better start researching draft prospects expecting to go 10-16 next year...

I think it is probable that RJ and Drummond are not moved but I assure you if a good deal presents itself, they are gone. But, there is no need to panic and move assets for less than they are worth.

Which is probably what SVG really means in these quotes. He'll ship out anyone, just give us a decent deal for it.
But I think a lot of us have to temper expectations that SVG is going to clean house. Which is a bit disappointing.

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
He's going into year four of a five year contract. Of course he's going to "stay the course", it's up to Gores to force him to make changes or fire his ass.
I remember being so excited when he was hired on here, not I can't stand to hear the guy talk anymore. I wish he chose Golden State, because we wold have got some sadsack in here otherwise, but would have bottomed out properly. Now we're a **** treadmill team with players who do not fit the city or the organization and are various levels of unlikable.

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
Honestly, I'm surprised this team even managed to win 37-38 games. It's just been brutal watching them the majority of the season.
It's safe to say that SVG isn't going anywhere for next season, so it's on him to get this team in the right direction. It's easier to fix a team you didn't build though. Waiving Smith was easy so long as the owner was on board. To get this team back on track, SVG is going to have to contradict moves/logic he's done over the past 3 seasons. That takes humility and acknowledgment that you've made mistakes. Or he'll just be stubborn and rearrange the deck chairs slightly, and this team will be stuck in mediocrity.

still don't trust him.
I'm not going to go by what he says anymore, I'm going to see if, as a coach, his approach to the game changes:
- Will he start only offensive minded players and then yell at them to play defense?
- Will he constantly post up the worst post up center in the league?
- Will he set the offense up to end on an Iso Morris fadeaway, midrange jumpshot, that great offensive strategy from 1992?
- Will he leave the best energy players (KCP, SJ) on the bench and then complain about the energy of the starting unit?
- Will he trot a combo guard out that pretends to be a point guard, and refuse to balance that out with a playmaking small forward, and then expense the offense to work? like the past 10 years of Pistons failure?
We'll see next year if his actions will speak, or his words will continue to fail.

You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.

Who are the guys that you can count on their professionalism and commitment on a night to night basis?
Well not your starting PG and C, who will be eating up 40% of your payroll

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
"Some of the time guys" This is Drummond to a T.
SVG used a lot of weasel words that left him pretty non-committal to making any significant actions. I expect him to take the easy route and basically run this back next season with whomever he mis-drafts with the 12th pick and sits all year while the guys drafted around him flourish.
If I was him, I'd be dangling Drummond for any top 10 pick I could.

I don't remember who it was, but someone said Drummond plus SJ and our pick for the Suns pick. I don't think they need Lonzo Ball if they do get that 2nd selection.

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
What do you expect him to say? "I am going to blow this funker up!" Sure would love to hear that but that immediately undercuts any kind of trade he might want to make. Also you have to add in the Gores factor. We are moving to a brand new arena next year. You think he is going to be cool with the team starting over? I doubt it.
My hope is that he blows this thing up. Get rid of Dre, Reggie, KCP and Morris. Those 4 have got to go. I'd like for us to keep Tobias and Boban but am indifferent to everyone else.

- Stan Van GundyAndre and I had a contest at the beginning of the year to see who could gain the most pant sizes. He went from a size 36 waist to a 42, I went from a size 44 to a size 56, safe to say I'm the real MVP. Let's get this money.

No way the Suns do that deal. I think more realistically, Drummond might fetch the 5th pick or later.

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
No GM is gonna be honest and lay out his real ideas for the off-season - why would you do that? You're giving your competitors info
Some people here are gonna be extremely disappointed when we aren't able to make any major moves and bring back the majority of the roster.
Will we try and trade dudes? Of course! Every team is looking to make moves but looking and actually completing them are 2 different things
IMO:
Drummond will be back. He's the "star" we use to sell tickets cause casuals know about him to some extent.
Bobo will be back, Jon will be back, Ish will be back, KCP will be back...
RJ, SJ, King, Harris, Mook could all go but I seriously doubt it.
They'll sell it as a down year, talk about continuity & internal growth, preach patience and youth...
Then we'll see what we see in November & December

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
this sounds exactly like drummond.
i wouldn't be surprised at all if jackson is back next year. SVG has been nothing but complimentary of him about his season last year and how he was playing before his injury.

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
I can't help but feel like SVG was a snake oil salesman. I remember him specifically saying "good is the enemy of great" in reference to the fact that he wants to build a contender, not just a 'good enough team'. And, of course, his repeated line of "not sacrificing the future for now." That's total BS. What future to sacrifice? This team is going nowhere, because he destroyed an semblance of cap management signing one of the highest paid under-performing benches in the NBA.
You can't talk about accountability then say Reggie is coming back better than ever (that is a lie), and let Drummond get away with dragging his lazy behind through an entire season. Drummond's role is a low skill high energy player. But, we got a maxed out low skill, low energy player. A total disgrace to the franchise.
Can anyone provide me with any historical examples of team that's good for about 35-40 wins that does not have a star continually bringing the same core back and suddenly winning 50+ games? Because, this is apparently what SVG believes will happen in the next year or two.

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
Van Gundy is not credible right now. For sure he mismanaged the roster, but the original sin is he misunderstood Drummond's value while accepting his job.

Drummond 2-3 years ago was our best bet to become a good or even great team again. It made sense to build around him when SVG took over. Its not SVG fault Drummond didnt develop, thats Drummonds fault. Drummond still has all the physical tools but lacks everything else to be a good basketball player. Trading him now just doesnt make sense to me, his trade value is at an all time low. Get Drummond a decent PG (healthy Reggie) and some shooting around him, let him put up some big stats and trade him then. Anyway if a decent deal is available this summer its time to move on.

Sounds like SVG read "Good to Great" by Jim Collins. He uses that exact line and the book is well read amongst CEOs and managers/leaders of all types.ImHeisenberg wrote:I can't help but feel like SVG was a snake oil salesman. he misunderstood Drummond's work ethic, at least.

Re: Van Gundy Quotes...
It's not realistic to expect them to blow it up coming into a new building. They'll run the same group back, blame this year on Reggie's injury, we'll get a lot of fluff quotes about guys being more accountable and we'll get another treadmill year, hoping to be just good enough to get the casual fans to come to the new arena.
Gores, SVG and a good portion of the fanbase aren't willing to Hinkie this thing. Stan knows we aren't winning a title with this core but he knows he won't survive bottoming out. Even if we found a Kwahi or Paul George with our draft pick they'll be chained to the bench for 2 years. Some of us just need to admit and accept that building a championship franchise is not the current goal.
