Statement game! What an effort to come back down 25-3 in San Antonio, on the second night of a back-to-back, in a very important game in the battle for the first seed. Amazing!

Think we've found our possible go-to answer for teams which double team Curry. The Spurs trapped the hell out of Curry and West was open all night long making great decisions and his shots. Curry's improvement really becomes apparent in situations like these. He's become much better at recognizing double teams early and calmly makes the right pass - and the team rotates properly for him to have an outlet - almost every time. If that keeps up in the playoffs the Warriors are in great shape.

Part of me was really looking forward to different line-ups and splits as a result of the Durant acquisition so that we can get bigger samples for certain line-ups and on/off splits.

I decided to play with WOWY data and have compiled splits and line-up data for the big four of Curry, Durant, Green and Thompson. Shout-out to nbawowy.com! If you're interested, here we go!

Of course it's not the be-all and end-all when it comes to conclusions drawn from it. It isn't adjusted for opponent's strength, match-ups, back-up players and exact on/off line-ups. But it tells us something and given the relatively large sample for many splits, two conclusions seem to be reasonable if we're relying on WOWY data.

1. Curry has clearly been the Warriors' MVP thus far.
2. Gren has indeed a great case for DPOY.

Read the boxscore and Green had a bad game. Watch the game and you knew he was the most important player for the win. Amazing defense, especially in the 4th quarter.

Otherwise rough game. Defense was good most of the game if we discount some poor stretches where rebounding and transition defense has hurt the Warriors. Offense wasn't free-flowing last night but fortunately Curry found his offense in the second half and helped to seal the deal. Igoudala continues to play great and McGee's offense in the 2nd quarter really helped to put some points on the boards as nothing else seemed to work.

Great win as the team showed passion and once again their comeback qualities. They fought and closed the game as well as you could hope for. I'm ready for the playoffs! :)

Great stuff, Power.

Steph Curry at +15.6 On/Off right now.

I hear people always saying that since Curry is playing with a stack team that somehow it means he should have a high on/off. That doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. When Curry on the bench, you usually have at least of of Durant, Thompson or Green on the court. That means the variance between his on/off should be closer than what it.

But this is showing us is the law of diminishing returns doesn't apply to the value of Steph Curry. He's still as valuable as ever playing with an even better team, and it reflects across the board looking at his advanced stats.

re: difference between Curry and Green

When Draymond was off the floor, then Curry most of his possessions was with Durant (70%). On the other hand with Steph off the floor, Livingston (so poor spacer and that's why offense drops to around LA without Curry) was a PG (75%)) and Green shared just 24% of time with Kevin. RAPM sees that (as well as quality of opponents) and that's why it gives higher impact to Draymond.

2. Gren has indeed a great case for DPOY.

re: difference between Curry and Green

When Draymond was off the floor, then Curry most of his possessions was with Durant (70%). On the other hand with Steph off the floor, Livingston (so poor spacer and that's why offense drops to around LA without Curry) was a PG (75%)) and Green shared just 24% of time with Kevin. RAPM sees that (as well as quality of opponents) and that's why it gives higher impact to Draymond.

Breaking down line-ups, substitutes, match-ups, opponents etc. is obviously the next step. RAPM helps with that but isn't the be-all and end-all either. But line-ups with Green and Durant and/or Thompson without Curry still perform quite poorly in comparison although the sample size is still too small to draw definite conclusions. Curry-led line-ups without Green and Durant still perform amazingly well. Re: Spacing. Yes, it is an issue with Livingston and without Curry but Curry being a great floor spacer himself makes it easier for him to play effectively in line-ups without much spacing around him, i.e. this is a quality we can directly attribute to him. So it's not as simply as saying Green's line-ups tend to struggle with spacing more and that limits the line-ups effectiveness when similar line-ups with Curry in an alternative scenario are still able to maintain offensive efficiency by virtue of Curry's own skill-set.

Yes, that's great Curry's quality, but if only Warriors' back up PG would have 3p shot (even someone like Nelson would change a lot IMO), then ORTG without Curry would be better, thus all these on/off are a bit skewed if we look at them without any adjustments. Generally, aside from Steph's own genius, he is in better situation without Green, than Draymond without him not only because of Livingston, but also because of having Durant in place of Green as Kevin played most of PF minutes in those lineups.

Curry just hit the 300 3s mark. 2nd best all time.

Not bad for a down shooting year.

33 points on 94.6 TS% and assists with only 1 turnover and it's only the third

Just Curry things

I think this pretty much proves who the real MVP of GS is between Durant and Curry (not including Draymond, because he's kind of an enigma).

It's definitely Curry. Most of his "decline" was because of adjusting to Durant and having one really flukey shooting slump.

During the 10 game winning streak: 26/8/5 in 33 mpg, on 48/44/91 splits (65% TS, 123 Orating)

And he's having another monster night tonight, which is only gonna raise his averages.

I think this team without KD is as equally good in RS. But we will need KD in PS because the games are much more physical and you don't want to have 2 shooters chucking threes all the time. Zaza will also need KD's length to protect the basket since he is a positional defender.

Curry looking as spry as ever for a couple games now, Iguodala playing with the confidence of his prime self while West is channeling his prime self, Green upping the defensive intensity with ease when it mattered and Klay showing some great consistency as of late. The team as a whole performed extremely well on both ends. The recent streak has shown some really promising signs for the upcoming playoffs.

The Warriors clinch the first seed on a back-to-back against the Suns without Durant, Green and Iguodala. So the game was a bit closer than it had to be and it required another great performance from Steph to not lose.

He ended the game with 42 Points (15-26 FG, 8-13 3P, 4-7 FTs), 5 Rebounds, 11 Assists, 2 Steals and 2 Blocks with 3 Turnovers and a game-high +25 in 35 Minutes. Hopefully he maintains his current level of aggressiveness and the spry movement in the playoffs.

edit: Oh, and the story of the Warriors' season:

Another historic regular season albeit it has been flying under the radar and somewhat taken for granted all year.

So...going into the playoffs this year, how do you think this team can lose 4 games against one opponent? Can trapping Curry work like it did last year? I have some serious doubts, but to be fair, I had those same doubts about the Warriors losing 4 last year as well. Just feels like this team will run through anyone in front of them with the Cavs going to **** post-ASB.

Durant may not play tonight. Calf strain on same leg he injured vs Washington. Doesn't seem serious, but calf strains can linger like a mofo. You are putting strain on the calf every single time you jump. If he's coming off the knee and now throw in the calf, compensating or adjusting to protect one area could eventually lead to issues in a different area. It's possible his last injury helped open the door for this one, can't say that for sure
