I see no logical reason to keep Ellenson on the protected list... very expendable.

Lol

Yeah dump him cause he's shown nothing in the massive amount of minutes we've given him!

This is the problem - we're caught between winning now and developing for the future.

Winning now should never be a choice - it should be a byproduct of the development you've already done!

You suck...so draft well for a few years

While developing those guys who sign true pros to short term deals to teach your kids good habits

While doing that you find young role players that can fill voids on your roster

Only once your kids have developed enough do you look to acquire larger pieces of the puzzle

We went to the acquiring role players stage too early, signing Jon, Ish & Bobo.

Most of the blame for that lies with Dre & RJ for not continuing to progress...some of the blame lies with SVG for not playing SJ enough...

Best case scenario we are a 40-50 win team if everyone comes correct:

Drummond - Jon - Bobo
Mook - Harris - King
SJ - Harris - Mook
KCP - SJ - Hilliard
RJ - Ish - Benji

That's 12 dudes already on roster!

IF a couple of dudes can get their heads outta their asses we'll be ok

Who's out there to be had in trade?
I like this thinking because another big is needed to kick Andre's ass into playing some defence and trying overall

Awful idea, We need a PG first before anything and a playmaker. A defensive 4 does nothing for this team

Leuer was our starter at PF most of the year. He is not a starter. Say what you want about Reggie but when he was healthy he was borderline All Star.

Boban and Ellenson are good backups
Time to choose between Tobias and Morris and pair that up with Leuer
Saying that I do hate Drummond's laziness this year. Hopefully he comes back around

this right here.

I've been saying since last year: SVG talks defense, but pays offense.

his paychecks talk louder than his voice, believe it or not.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.

EAsy solution.

Draft Zach Collins. Stretch 4/backup 5.
Get rid of Morris, Leuer.

Now you've got a 5 man big rotation:
HEnry/Tobias
Drummond/Zach/Boban

Or bring Tobias off the bench at the 3 (make him lose a few pounds over the summer):
Reggie/Ish
KCP/Bullock
SJ/Tobias
Zach/Henry
Drummond/Boban

(yes I know Tobias is better offensively than SG, but SJ is better defensively. You need a minimum of 3 plus defenders on the floor especially in the starting lineup. More than 2 offensive minded players on the floor doesn't work).
(That's why the team did better with Leuer starting even when Leuer wasn't scoring. That's why the bench did better with SJ even when SJ wasn't scoring. Tobias is better off the bench.)

You want a unicorn, if you want a PF that is an elite defender and a good perimeter shooter. Draymond Green is really the only one that truly sticks out. Sure, Ibaka and Milsap can do 70% of those things, but they're both too old for where this core is at.

This team's top need is talent. Period. We don't have anyone to even construct a team around. It's a team of flawed role players.

not unicorn. draymond is not great shooter, neither but he can punish you.
just like; Anthony Davis (great mid range game), Markieff Morris, Marvin Williams, Taj Gibson (has mid range game), JaMychal Green, Patrick Patterson, Amir Johnson (he can shoot now). You mention Ibaka, Milsap. Aldridge has a great mid range game ans he is good defender. James Johnson is one of the MIP canditade, can shoot. Porzingis is not a bad defender.

interestingly, if you don't have a shooting game, you can't find a starting job in th nba as PF.

Maybe Zach Collins could fill that void...

I don't think anyone is saying that he's untouchable by any means. But you can't trade everybody, and it would be incredibly stupid to trade someone on a rookie deal, who has exactly the skill set this team needs and is lacking everywhere else on this roster if he can develop it. Is he untouchable? Absolutely not. Does it make any sense to trade him given his potential value on this team and affordable contract? Absolutely not.

I was just gonna say he's probably the most realistic player we could get to fit the description.

Which would be a lot easier to stomach if two of those flawed players weren't being paid like All Stars (or franchise players, in Drummond's case).

If we had this group for cheap you might have some cause for optimism here. Its a fairly young group of admittadly flawed players but there would be room to add.

As it is, especially if KCP is resigned, this is going to be one of the most expensive teams in the league, with no clear direction or franchise identity.

Yikes.

And yes, the people saying that adding another power forward makes categorically no sense unless Leuer or Tobias are on their way out are correct. Its an absurd idea.

As for Ellenson, you don't trade anyone on a rookie deal unless you're getting a sizable talent upgrade at a position of need. Though for us there are moments where I feel like just about everything is a position of need.

Priority is to start Ellenson at 4. We don't have many skilled players and he is the most skilled player we have. 20/25 minutes per night. He can shoot, he can rebound. We need defense at center and from 2 and 3 spot. KCP provides defense. Johnson can. Tobias sixth man.

JRK wrote:#1 priority would be total destruction and keep only Harris, KCP, Boban, Johnson, Ellenson.

#2 Detroit needs talent to build around it. Make some good trades, SVG can do it.

And I still can't believe how Detroit didn't pursue players like James Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Lance Stephenson, Tim Hardaway Jr.

I really believe we could have won more games this season with that starting line up than the trash we put out this season.

My main priority is to get rid of Morris and dre and go for shooting, and players who bring it their all every game.

Trade for Vucevic, and then get a defense first PF. That's the only way this'll work considering both defense and offense talented PFs are thin pickings.
