Before everybody goes absolute apesh*t, that is what every GM has to say publicly. I bet Heinke never even said he was "pro tank".

It ALWAYS has to be a "plausible deniability" scenario.

Phil says plan is to trade Melo but not "dump" him onto just any team

Phil: not trying to make Melo into MJ or Kobe. He's still an elite scorer.

This is totally grown-up talk. There's nothing petty about Phil really.

Phil: We didn’t have an identity. Aggressive play that creates teammwork. Brought up 3 or 4 players to build with. People see where we’re going with this. We didn’t have a lot of draft picks. We’re hoping for talent this year - many are young and could take 3-4 years to develop - beyond my tenure here. I didn’t come here just to win the championship, but were directed by my instructions form Dolan to become identifiable as who we are and how we play.

I'll take a second to comment on this as well, hopefully in a level headed, not knee jerk Pro Phil or Pro Melo way.

Phil came out and say the Knicks are rebuilding. This statement is further clarifying it in two ways. Telling the fans that the team expects to part ways with it's best but aging veteran player. Then putting in CLEARLY to Melo their intention is to rebuild, so Melo can make accurate decisions based on that, in terms of what is going on with the team. For all we know, Melo may choose to stay, but since he has a NTC, Phil is making it clear to him, publicly, that a rebuild is on and he makes his decision to stay or move with that knowledge. Also, it sets the tone of what Melo's behavior and expectations should be if he stays - meaning no grumbling over playing time, losses, etc.
