You don't know how he feels. It's entirely possible he WANTS to play to get his mind off of it and honor his sister.

Let the kid do what he wants.

I think his teammates are his family at the moment and he wants to be around them

I was gonna say something similar. This may actually be his way of coping. Going home and missing this game may just hurt him more. People deal with grief differently. This just may be exactly what he needs.

Based upon the probable desire to spend more then 24 hours or so with his family and the travel distance between Boston - Washington and Washington - Chicago makes it difficult for him to do that unless he delays a return to Washington until after game 2. He may not want to delay his return until after game 2 and I wouldn't blame him at all.

I don't think its realistic or even worthwhile for him to travel home after tonights game and then try to get back for game 2. That is a brutal travel schedule combined with everything else he has to do would make it super difficult to play in game 2. Just the travel alone without having to do anything else would make it hard.

Boston is going to be strong for IT today! He's been the Celtics' strength all year long time for some payback. Lift him up, he needs all the emotional lift the Garden and his teammates can provide. Truthfully the announcement of the starting line up might be pretty rough, the outpouring of emotion for IT is going to be tangible.

Personal anecdote:

Whenever anything bad has happened in my life and I need to think or be alone or grieve, I grab a ball and find a hoop. It is my stress relief. The repetitiveness of dribble and shoot allows me to free my mind to think, while occupying the rest of me. I just go and work through it.

For IT, it might be easier for him to play. Gives him a chance to go somewhere else for a few hours and just do what he does. Everyone handles stress and loss in their own way. Playing in the game might be his way. Either way, we're all behind him.

I suspect IT is balancing things and doesn't want to let down his family or teammates.

I think the most likely solution is to fly out after this game and miss game 2...spend a lot of time with his family in Washington and meet the Celtics in Chicago. But I could see a scenario where he plays game 2 and then misses game 3. It really depends upon when the funeral and how he and his family want to handle it.

This **** is breaking my heart man..he looks like he's in no condition to play. Suddenly to me as a fan this series went from meaning so much to meaning nothing. Isaiah got us here this means nothing to me if he's suffering the way he iss..God bless you IT.

That clip of Thomas with AB killed me and the home feed stream showing how hard he's fighting tears in warmups is killing me. Just the fact he's going out there to play alone has made him immune from criticism from me. Dude could not score a single point all playoffs and I will applaude that man.

I think IT should head home. 22 year old sister, he remembers when she was born and watched her grow up.

How unfair is life? This is supposed to be a great time for the Thomas family, ITs time to shine, so much joy. And the family has this kind of tragedy. I don't even want to watch the game. I just want him to feel better. So helpless.
