Would you sacrifice the Lakers 2019 pick for...?

A bit of fun whilst we countdown till the lottery.

If you had to choose now between the following:

- the Magic get a top 3 pick this year but so do the Lakers so the Magic miss out on the Lakers first in 2019

OR

- the Magic get number 5 or 6 this year but the Lakers miss on a top 3 pick also so the Magic get the Lakers pick in 2019.

Which would you choose?

This is easily option 2 for me. This team needs as much talent as possible, and the value in picking 3rd instead of 6th in this draft isn't worth nearly enough to flush away what could be an extra lottery pick.

I'm with Cammo, unless it's the #1 pick in option 2. I don't want Ball here to go to LA down the line, only Fultz it's in a tier above and would want me to take 2 2nd rounders

I'd rather have a top three pick this year. That Lakers first is two years away and a lot can change. It might have value, but it also might not even be a lottery pick if it comes to fruition.

The two second-round picks have legitimate value as well (especially the one this year).

The rule of this league has consistently proven to be that two B's doesnt equal an A player. If being top 3 this year got us an A instead of a B, i do it without thinking.

At a minimum, I will take the 2 for 1 deal.

I believe that the chances of the Lakers signing enough talent outright between now and 2019 are slim enough that the draft pick would be quite valuable.

I think we could pick up a good enough prospect now at 5 in a deep draft to sort of maintain a rebuild effort.

In 2019 we either get 2 great lotto picks or we are a better team with a lotto pick in hand.

The strength of each draft class varies so much and you never know when you'll have a great class as opposed to a completely forgettable class.

I still take the Chance on 2 high selections.

I despise the lakers. Also we won't be contending in 2 years, so we will NEED that pick. For trade or talent. It's about time we take talent out of la's hands.

Quantity doesn't always equal quality. As someone mentioned before, that lakers pick may very well end up out of the lottery. I'd take top 3 this year all day. Added bonus: you get their second rounder this year and next year as well. Lots of sleepers end up early second round.

I guess it comes down to how you see the players in the 1-3 range vs 5-6 range this year.

Personally I would take a top 3 pick this year and let the Lakers have theirs. I don't really want the Sixers to have two lottery picks this year either.

If it's the 1st pick, I take Fultz and your future is set. However, that 2-7 range I see a lot the prospects in the same tier. I'm cool with selecting between Tatum/Isaac/Fox/Smith at 5 or 6, relying on internal growth and restructuring of the roster, and a potential lottery pick from LA in 2 years (it's tough to see them climbing in the West).

Yeah I guess responses may change if option 1 was the number 1 pick this year.

Interesting question. Might immediate instinct was to take the multiple 1sts option. I think a guaranteed top 3 is great, but I'm also not under the illusion that the only potential franchise talent is restricted to those 3 picks. So give me good scouting and the two 1sts.

Hopefully with the Lakers losing their pick this year, they won't have enough assets to lure a big name in either of the following summers. Paul George is obviously a threat to sign there, maybe even DMC. So yeah, that future Lakers pick might end up being late lottery or even mid 1st rounder, and maybe we end up in another Porzingis situation, so there's every possibility it goes wrong.

But if your scouting is on point then you should be able to find the Giannis/McCollum/Gobert/Green/Jokic's of the draft and land them with a top 7 pick.

Considering the Lakers would lose this year's pick to the Sixers, and I don't have a lot of confidence in their current team, I think that Lakers pick could easily be top 3. That's the priority for me.

yeah I am going to go with the first option. This is a good draft and. we don't know 2019 all that well yet as to how good that will be. But the main reason is how good of a pick will that 2019 be. I still like the Lakers young talent and think as they grow they will get better and very well could sign or even trade for someone who puts them more into playoff picture and thus I think that pick has at least a decent chance to be out of the lottery. Plus if we do get top three that pushes someone out which very well could be the Lakers so I am going with the more certainty of option one over the uncertainty of option where we don't know where that 2019 Lakers pick ends up at.

its not just finding them, its them being in the right position and getting the right chances and development. Green might not be what he is today if Jackson was still coaching, he didnt seem to give him much time. Another team might have tried to rush Giannis and given up on him and ruined his confidence.

I would take option 2 because we have little tradeable assets. I'm not sure what the 2019 prospects will look like, but this draft is a total guess outside of Fultz for the most part.

Even if we trade the 2019 pick it would be for something substantial.

Option #1 because the future is uncertain and we have no idea where that Lakers pick will wind up.

I really want Jackson fultz or Tatum more than a potential 2019 pick.

I think those 3 are a much higher level than 4-8 picks this year. Lakers first in 2019 could be good pick if they lose their 1 this year,but they have spot of young talent that could develop into a playoff caliber team in a few years as is, so that 2019 pick could just as easily be in the late teens as it could top 5

Option 2 for me. It would give me a little pause when considering which is the better plan moving forward, but the more assets the better. Top 3 isn't specific enough; if you said the first overall pick, that would be a no-brainer, since Fultz projects to be a potential superstar. I don't get the same feeling about Ball or Jackson, so I'd rather have the 2019 pick and hope for a superstar then. Either way, our 2017 pick will still net a quality player.

Option 2
Magic Johnson's brand power makes this tricky given how popular he is for potential FAs but the potential of having a Boston situation sounds intriguing if LA is still bad that year. The top 2 players in this draft will likely be PGs(who don't project to have to much swaying power as stars as shown by IT). . I rather take our normal pick which likely leans towards fit and roll with the luck of the Lakers.
