Solomon Thomas might be my favorite 49ers (first round) pick since Patrick Willis. Only thing that could've topped it was Trubisky.

As close to perfect a first round as I think is possible... Short of Cleveland going Trubisky number 1 instead and the Niners Walking away with Garrett and Foster...

I'd rather have Thomas + the two thirds (if we use them wisely).

I'm so friggn' pissed Cleveland choked that game away against the Steelers...

So what's the Niners' D-line going to look like on 1st down?

LDE: Thomas
NT: ???
UT: Buckner
RDE: Lynch??? Tank???

Or does Thomas play RDE & Armstead plays LDE w/ Lynch playing DT on passing downs?

Niners need a big, run-stopping NT and a true LEO, IMO.

This is a weird group of DL to have. They now have 4 guys whose best position is LDE (Thomas, Armstead, Lynch & Buckner), and none of them are true DTs.

Leo: Ahmad Brooks
RDE (4t): Ronald Blair (Arik Armstead didn’t participate in team drills)
NT (1t): Earl Mitchell
DT (3t): DeForest Buckner
LDE (6t): Tank Carradine (Aaron Lynch was the LDE in sub packages)

That's what was reported how they lined up during the minicamp session open to the media with Armstead getting work at LEO in individual drills.

DJ Jones will be added to NT and Thomas they'll probably line him up at a few different spots to see where everyone fits best.

LEO is actually the LE position. Linebacker positions are the same (SAM, MIKE, WILL), though they have different roles. WILL is more of an inside guy, definitely seems to be Foster's position. The SAM in a 43 Over is someone that does line up closer to the LOS, can rush the passer or drop back into coverage. I figured Brooks is probably going to be the guy here. LEO is usually a smaller, quicker guy. Thomas may have enough athleticism to play this position but his run defense abilities could also play on the opposite side. Thomas is pretty much a lock candidate to be inside on 3rd down passing situations.

Thomas can play almost any DL position at a high level. We'll make it work.

I hope we're more of a hybrid scheme than anything else. Rarely these days do you see strictly a 4-3 or a 3-4...there's a lot of mixing and matching between the two and we have the personnel to do that pretty well, IMO. It's up to Saleh and co. to make that transition happen seamlessly.

I think it'll be: Armstead/Buckner/Purcell/Thomas

Lynch would be a better choice for leo in the base package if he gets into shape. Putting Armstead there is a major mistake.

Lynch may be a victim of his own bad habits.... the guy can't get in shape, can't get on the field... its not a hard concept.

which is why i explicitly state if he gets into shape, it's not hard to read

ok snappy....

Let me rephrase that, bad habits are tough to knock off. He's had years to do so and same story entering camp and his play on the field has been hindered by it.

Based on prior patterens that he conjured on his own, i won't be surprised if he ends up as a casualty.

the "its not a hard concept" was directed at Lynch and not anyone posting.

Is it getting close to time to use the B word? :noway:

Salvage his career by using him solely as a DT, splitting time with a big NT?
