i dont mind nance playing spot minutes at c. but overall. the concern for me personally isnt how well he could hold the fort - we all know he's probably our best defensive big - but how much beating he could take there full time. he's already quite injury prone.

Nance statistically was terrible at center last year.

He might be able to study Draymond Green to find out how a mobile 6'8" forward could anchor a defense. But it's something he has to prove, because he hasn't done it yet.

He is a good defender with good instincts. I see him as a good weakside help defender. His rebounding is solid, he's unselfish, and he's smart.

But starting at center? Too much banging, even in today's league of small ball. And the biggest issue with Nance is his health.

So no, I'd rather save him from wear and tear. Especially when we have Zubac who's been crushing it in his limited minutes. And of course, we have millions and millions invested in Mozgov, who is still one of the best defensive true 7-footers in the league.

Our perimeter defense was so poor, I think it's hard to really evaluate the centers. We couldn't stop Miss Daisy from driving on us.

I think Nance is better coming off the bench. With his durability issues, I think he's better as an "X" factor each night. Zubac needs to play and develop for this team's future. Mozgov and Black can be defensive centers on the second unit. Maybe Black's defensive numbers and salary will make him a good trade chit in a package deal.

Right now the Lakers are probably better off with Mozgov at the 5 and eventually allowing Zubac to transition into that role. Nance doesn't have the body to be a full-time 5 and he's much better off on our bench unit which isn't bad at all.

Lakers are better off trading Mozgov to the Cavs after they lose against the Warriors.

And signing Nerlens Noel to be the young bouncing defensive big man.

Bring Zubac slowly, no reason to inflate his value right now.

With Nance as the starter at center and Randle (or Ingram) at the four, you're embarking on a unique journey in basketball where on defense you can switch every screen. It's a distinct defensive advantage, for sure, and one Walton should definitely be contemplating.

Nance, starting, would give this team that unique defensive versatility of "anyone can guard anyone":

PG - Russell/Clarkson
SG - Jackson
C - Nance
PF - Randle
SF - Ingram

or

PG - Russell
SG - Jackson
C - Nance
PF - Ingram
SF - George

I would love to have Noel at this point, but I fear his RFA status will price us out. Cuban loves overpaying.

Cuban would have to pay significant luxury tax if he signs Noel to anything close to the max. He might do it, he might not. But the Lakers should absolutely make an offer for Noel, if they're not getting serious interest from top FA's.

They don't need Mozgov that bad to give up Frye. Shumpert they'd include. Frye's too important for them.
