He will have struggles defensively but he is a smart positional defender, reads defenses well like Rondo does to pick off passes, and has enough size that you can hide him on spot-up SGs or SFs.
In the past 25+ years, how many teams have won a championship with a transcendent passer as a top-3 player? I'm counting 0.
How many have even made the Finals? Anybody other than Kidd's Nets?
Just last year? or any year Lebron wins the title so 2013 and 2012 too. Dallas Mavs and Jason Kidd in 2011...it's not the ultimate skill, but it's a damn good one and one that is pretty much the most certain to translate to the pros. Let's not act like it's the only thing Lonzo Ball has too.
The question should been when was the last time a transcendent passer won when it was their best and truly only elite skill while also being one of the best players on their team. Lebron is an elite scorer and great defender. Kidd wasn't close to his prime when the Mavs won, and they won mostly because of Dirk, Terry, Barea, Chandler, and Marion. The last time was really Magic.
I don't think his point was that transcendent passers can't win. Of course they can. They just aren't a necessary ingredient to contending like some other things (like having a wing scorer who can isolate..), and it seems like using a big chunk of your cap space for elite passers doesn't really help move the needle in the end compared to other vital skill areas.
I'll take elite scoring or elite defensive players who know how to fit into an offensive system before I take an elite passer or elite rebounder. Passing and rebounding are two skill areas that can be made up for through teamwork. Scoring and pure defense (especially scoring) is much harder to make up for with teamwork.
I do want to say while I don't value elite passing a ton, it is pretty beautiful to watch when one player is that good at it. If Durant had come to the Celtics, I'd probably be way more inclined to say the Celtics should pick up Ball. My number 1 priority for this team is to add more scorers.
