Re: New Arena Design and Construction -NEW SCOREBOARD UNVEILED PAGE 54
"Truss Tuesday" went off without a hitch at the Milwaukee Bucks arena construction site downtown.
A raw, blustery wind Tuesday morning didn't delay the installation of the first roof truss, which was raised high into the air and bolted into place at the northwest corner of the arena bowl.
Installed about 9 a.m. was the first half of the truss, a 23-ton piece of assembled steel that's about 35 feet high by 100 feet long. The piece was lifted into place by workers for contractor JP Cullen operating a crane working in sync with iron workers in two boom lifts.
"Smooth, very smooth," said iron worker Tom Williams, who rode in the boom lift basket with partner Shane Steaber high above the arena bowl. Steaber took care of bolting down the truss while Williams ran the controls and communicated with the crane operator during the "pick."
"Nothing too dramatic," Williams said. "It was easy."
Steaber bolted one end of the truss to the top rim of the building, and the other end rested on a temporary tower, with the crane holding it stable.
A series of smaller secondary trusses were also lifted and provide a sort of cross-bar connection that will give the trusses rigidity.
Early Wednesday morning, the second half of the main truss will be raised, a 150-foot-long section. Once bolted to the piece raised Tuesday, it will form the first complete span of steel across the seating bowl. Additional secondary trusses will be added, a process that will be repeated throughout the summer until nine trusses are installed.
"It's kind of like a big Tetris game that we're playing here," said Ellen Becker, a project engineer with Mortenson Construction, the construction manager for the arena project.
Bucks and arena construction officials said the truss lift was an important milestone for the $524 million project. Bucks president Peter Feigin watched Tuesday's lift and was effusive in his praise for the progress of the arena work.
"It's the birth of a building. It's for real," Feigin said. "This is going to be one of the best places in the world to watch basketball."
Feigin said he was pleased that the project was "on time and on budget."
The aggressive construction schedule calls for the new arena to be open in time for the 2018 NBA season.
Angie Helfert, a Mortenson project engineer, said Tuesday's successful lift was "a huge day" for the project.
"We picked this day out a year ago" for the first truss lift, she said. "And we hit it."
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Seeing that thing going up gave me goosies. Cannot wait until it opens.
Opening day of the new arena in '18...no Kidd, and Jabari returns. That'd be a magical day.
He won't be on the court but watch, he will be POBO

Re: New Arena Design and Construction -NEW SCOREBOARD UNVEILED PAGE 54
Seems like it won't be too much of a problem based on this part...
Derek Cunz, a senior vice president for Mortenson, said the zinc panel system in Minneapolis is "a completely different system" from the one that will be used on the new Bucks arena. Additionally, he said officials "have tested mock-ups for air, water, and wind infiltration..........................Bond said the zinc panel system being used here in Milwaukee "is near foolproof."
If it's really foolproof then I'm thinking it must be stronger than what's being used in Minnesota.

Re: New Arena Design and Construction -NEW SCOREBOARD UNVEILED PAGE 54
Troubles at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis - including zinc metal panels that are coming loose - should not cause concern about the new Milwaukee Bucks arena, an executive for the construction company for both projects says.
“U.S. Bank Stadium features a custom-designed exterior enclosure that is fundamentally different from what is designed and specified for the Milwaukee Bucks arena," said a statement issued by Derek Cunz, senior vice president of Mortenson Construction.
Mortenson is the construction manager for the $524 million Bucks arena that's being built just north of the Bradley Center in downtown Milwaukee. The company was the general contractor on the $1.1 billion home for the Minnesota Vikings, which opened last fall in Minneapolis.
Last week the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that "leaky walls and loose panels remain a concern without definitive agreement on the extent of the problem or the proper repairs." The report said the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority is having the exterior of the building, which is covered by zinc panels, tested and studied by engineers and metallurgists. Some of the panels were seen flapping in high winds last year, and in December several blew off of the building, the Star Tribune reported.
The authority's Executive Director Rick Evans told the paper that the durability of the panels is a health and safety concern that is "at the top of my priority list."
Zinc panels are a key feature planned for the exterior of the Bucks arena, which is being built with $250 million in public money. Those panels stirred some of the most passionate debate over the design of the arena, with some detractors saying they would give the arena a "Rust Belt" feel. Project designers, however, said the zinc panels can take on the look of wood or leather and will change appearance in varying degrees of light.
Mortenson executive Cunz said zinc was the only thing in common between the Bucks arena and the Minnesota project.
"The only similarity is the metal panel material, which is a zinc alloy, however, the manufacturers of the panels are not the same," he said. "The insulation and waterproofing system behind the zinc panels as well as the enclosure’s design, configuration, and fastening system are all different as well."
Cunz added: "The enclosure for the Bucks arena is based on industry-standard practices that have been utilized on countless projects across the country."
"Mortenson stands behind its projects and the work of our subcontractors to make certain the facilities we build operate as intended," Cunz said.

Both use zinc. Interesting that Cunz never said what the actual problem is in Minnesota and then he says:
"The enclosure for the Bucks arena is based on industry-standard practices that have been utilized on countless projects across the country."
I"m sure the Minnesota stadium was also based on "industry standard practices".

Yeah, nothing is built to fail. When avoidable issues arise, some detail that falls outside of what's considered "industry-standard practice" will slip by the project manager, some factor won't be properly considered, or you'll just see pure negligence.
On the smaller scale, you have things like the Vikings Stadium panels or the fact that the stadium is a death trap for birds in the area.
On a larger scale, you can have tragedy. I think we all remember the Big Blue accident in 1999, which killed three people and pushed back MP's opening for a year.
That was because of a combination of all three of those issues and it has disastrous results.

I was pretty young when the Big Blue accident happened so I don't fully remember it, but wow that was terrible.

Yeah that was horrible. I'm sure it was on some minds yesterday when they did the truss lift.

The arena isn't opening for a long time yet. Its not really a surprise it hasn't been named yet is it? Figured they'd have some sort of opening naming party scenario next year.

I'm sure it will be something inspired, like the barn.

Re: New Arena Design and Construction
I am not an insider but I talked to someone at one of the local companies (i.e. Miller, Poto, H-D, Northwestern, etc...) and the Bucks are wanting a VERY large sum for the naming rights. I don't know how legit this number is but it could be around 300 million for the life of the contract.
I am thinking the above companies have all passed. But things could change. My opinion, it seems more likely we see an out of state company sponsor.

Re: New Arena Design and Construction
It wouldn't surprise me if the initial price was very high. Makes business sense. See if anyone bites. And then slowly bring the number down. I don't think they'll limit their search to local companies. It won't matter to them who ultimately gets the naming rights. Whoever offers the most will get it.
