That Spoelstra should be considered an incentive to play in Miami was made clear during conversations with multiple players in the final two months of the season.
When I asked James Johnson why he said this has been the most enjoyable experience of his career, he said: “Just the consistency you see from the coach. I've never had that before ever. When you have consistency like that, it makes it easier to play for him, it makes it easier to want to win for him and makes it easier to build trust level.
“When I say consistency, I [mean] it's doing the same thing, not giving you the same minutes every game, but consistently getting on you enough, praising you a little bit, holding me to my word. When you get a consistent coach you look up to like coach Spo, it makes things easier.”
Forward Okaro White offered this, unsolicited: “Coach Spo, he wants to give you confidence. If he sees you lagging a little bit of confidence, the thing with him is ‘take a deep breath, be you. It's fine when you be you.’ He has the trust in me that I will always give my best, always play hard. One of the games, I think it was Toronto, I was a little down on myself. He's like: 'Relax.' I said, 'I'm not helping the team.' He said 'every time you step on the court, you play your hardest. That's all we can ask for.’
“He brought me down and gave me a confidence boost. He's a great coach for so many things and I didn't understand until I was here and was able to see it.”
And Ellington, late in the season, offered this response to a question in which Spoelstra wasn’t even mentioned: “Coach Spo -- that's what keeps my engine going. He's been great since the beginning. From when I first stepped on the court, he looked at me and said, 'I want you to get up as many threes as you can.' You hear that and you're like, ‘Oh. All right.’ Let me find my spots where I can get them at, some good looks.’ I'm not going to go out and fire a bunch of bad shots….
“Teams emphasize winning but it's a little different here. It's the standard. It's the culture. It's the lifestyle. You've got winning organizations and you have losing organizations. This is a winning organization that breeds champions and competitors.”

It's nice to see everyone finally acknowledging just what a good coach Spo is.

Re: Spo is the man.
I think a lot of fans were nervous during the big 3 that.... Maybe Spo was holding those teams back.
With Spo's last two seasons of shaping cast offs into threats, it really looks like it was a player fit issue more then coaching.
I really look back at those rough playoff games in the Big 3 era and I remember knowing somebody had to step up to turn the tide. Obviously when Lebron was Lebroning it was not an issue, but when Mario Chalmers feels he needs to take over a game because nobody else will....it points to court leadership issues.
I really hope somebody like Shane Battier writes a tell all book. I bet we would be shocked at what was going on during those failed playoff runs.

Spo is a good coach. He's had bad years and great years. One thing I appreciate about him is that he tries hard for the Heat; thus he's trying hard for the Heat fans. Hard work and talent pays off. Pat has done well for him and you just know he will get him the talent to make the Heat a ligit contender again.

I'm sorry but I'm still not sold. The Big 3 teams underachieved, and it's going to take more than 41-41 to change my mind about his coaching ability. We'll see how he does next year.

If only LBJ had HALF of the posting-up skill set he learned during that long, lockout off season in these finals.
Three-peat.
For good measure, let's also say that Mike Bibby made only 1/3 of the threes he took, rather than that abysmal three point shooting percentage he had in the finals (which was something crazy like 10 or 15%). Hard to believe he shot 45% from three during that regular season.

I'll never forgive Lebron for not showing up in that series. I will forever believe that he choked on purpose because Wade was outshining him in that series. Lebron's ego is that Big that he will never let anyone say that he rode Wade's coat tails that year.

i think everyone agrees the Big 3 era should have been better, it should not have have taken a Miracle 3 to split their finals record 50-50.
Maybe coaching, but we also had nights where Mario Chalmers was the leading scorer in the Finals. You cant absolve players of that.
As much as i do like Lebron, I also remember how he disappeared at times in the playoffs. Hard to blame Spo when your leader is on the court for 38 to 40 minutes and has taken 14 shots as Victory is slipping out of your hands.

We lost Toronto with Kyle Lowry & DeMarr DeRozan pulling the same choke job they're pulling right now. Their is zero excuse for that. Zero... Not for a two time NBA Championship coach.
Hard worker... Great guy... Zero natural feel for the game as far as in game adjustments & rotations go.

Big 3 would've been the 4th team in the last 40 years to 3peat had LeBron not had the most embarrassing Finals performance in NBA history. Also not sure how Wade's crumbling health was Spo's fault.

Spo's secret sauce? Lowering expectations with a craptastic 11-30 first half record. Too bad for all the slobs that put in a full season of work.

Mike D'Antoni, Erik Spoelstra awarded inaugural Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year award
Official release | NBA.com
May 7, 2017 12:29 PM ET
Houston Rockets Head Coach Mike D’Antoni and Miami HEAT Head Coach Erik Spoelstra are the co-recipients of the inaugural Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award, the National Basketball Coaches Association announced today.
The Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award recognizes the dedication and hard work of NBA Head Coaches and is presented annually to a Head Coach who helps guide his players to a higher level of performance on the court and shows outstanding service and dedication to the community off the court...
...Through the leadership of Head Coach Erik Spoelstra, the Miami HEAT finished the 2016-2017 regular season with 41 wins and a tie for 8th place in the Eastern Conference, missing the playoffs on a tie-breaker with the Chicago Bulls. He led the HEAT to the biggest first half/second half turnaround in league history. The HEAT were 11-30 at the mid-point mark and Spoelstra led the HEAT to a 30-11 slate to finish out the season. And this was accomplished despite the HEAT suffering through an injury-plagued season, one in which the HEAT lost 328 player games due to injury or illness, the most in the NBA last season. Spoelstra’s adaptability and tutelage led to career years for Hassan Whiteside, Tyler Johnson, Wayne Ellington, Dion Waiters and James Johnson.
The National Basketball Coaches Association, and its entire membership, congratulates Coach D’Antoni and Coach Spoelstra on their impressive seasons. The Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award trophy will be presented to both of them at the NBCA Annual Meeting of Head Coaches in September....
