Derozan will be the face of what? A 40-win team?

If we S&T Kyle, we need to trade Derozan as well and rebuild properly. You either move ahead with both or neither. You aren't going to be able to replace either one's production via trade, free agency, or late draft picks (Kyle being the harder of the two to replace).

Let everyone walk, or sign and trade. Trade Carroll and Cojo. Move Jonas as well.

Pray we get a top 4 pick next year, or somehow magically get RJ Barrett.

Fire Casey - Hire Stack

SnT Lowry (assuming he's willing to help us out after all this)

Offer DD to LA for Ingram + more

Rebuild for one year and offer Wiggins the max next summer. Him and Powell would make a fantastic duo.

Sign Jeff Teague if Lowry terms are difficult to stomach. He's worse than Lowry in the regular season but is 2 years younger and had a better playoff against the Cavs.

Note: Raps are over the cap so this would have to be some form of S&T.

Sign Serge Ibaka.

Trade Jonas Valanciunas and Cory Joseph and a pick if necessary for a star wing who fits in well next to Derozan and shoots a ton of 3s. This player would need to be special enough to offset the drop from Lowry down to Teague.

I've previously suggested Val, CoJo, Norm + 2018 first rounder to Indy for Paul George. Could be part of a bigger S&T assuming Indy is looking to get something back for PG13 before he bolts next offseason and a lottery pick in this year's draft is off the table.

Hire the next Brad Stevens to coach a more diverse offensive team that runs its offence primarily through the two wings with Teague and Ibaka as 15ppg complimentary pieces.

Move Norm to a 6 man role.

Start Poeltl at C.

Make Siakam the backup PF.

I think if we're going to bring in a real complementary wing player, Norm will have to be part of the outgoing package.

Ibaka and Tucker won't have any interest to stay and who could blame them. No more Lowry, PP and Carroll and trade DD to start.

Carroll and Patterson do okay in the regular season but have not performed in the playoffs.

So signing Carroll as a FA has not worked out for a team with championship aspirations.

Yet the Raptors let Biyombo walk. Maybe Masai didn't have a choice because of the cap situation?

Roster is good enough to be a 50-win team, which would get the team a top 4 seed in the EC. Maybe that's all that the team ownership wants, have a winning team that sells tickets, but not willing to pay out huge luxury taxes.

So give up huge contracts to Lowry and Ibaka and hope for Lebron declines in a couple of years? Problem with that is Lowry is not that younger so father time may get him in another couple of years.

Raptors couldn't go over the cap to sign Biyombo last year because they didn't have his bird rights. It was nearly impossible for the Raps to bring him back unless he would have taken a *massive* paycut relative to what ORL offered.

I would try and resign Lowry to exact same deal as DeRozan. If he stays great. If not adios. I would resign Ibaka 4*20, Resign Tucker 3*10, would try and trade JV and Carroll. If you resign Lowry then trade Joseph with Carroll and a pick. Let Pat Pat go...add some outside shooting with vet deal and let younger guys play. No point in tanking ...no guarantee that works. There are a lot of teams way worse...Lebron is a horse looks like he has three to five years left...but better to keep a competitive core and hope to get opportunistic on trade or draft...I don't want to go back to old days.

Let's talk about Demar

Post#112 » by Harold_and_Kumar » Mon May 8, 2017 12:57 am

Having watched Demar for a long time now, I still have some burning questions that just won't go away and it concerns me that people want to build around him.

1) Demar doesn't have any elite skills. I don't consider getting to the free throw line an elite skill because as we've seen time and again, when the game is on the line or against a contender, the whistle disappears. If you look around the league, most star players have an elite skill - whether it be a killer first step, vision or shooting - that shred a defense no matter what schemes the coach has drawn up. Demar is lacking in this area in that most of Demar's offense is exploiting the defender's ineptitude, laziness and stupidity; a tactic not as fruitful in the playoffs.

2) Demar's neither good enough defensively for us to slow down the pace to a halfcourt game because he gets exposed, nor good enough shooting the three to play a modern uptempo style. I cannot see us contending on any level with Demar's defense as bad as it has been thus far, and he'd have to shoot close to 60% from mid-range to match all the threes being launched at the same percentage he shoots at mid-range. He must address one of these parts of his game.

3) We pay him a yearly salary that forces him to be able to carry a team. We saw glimpses that he could possibly do this in the latter part of the season, but many of these games were against questionable competition and the sample size was still pretty small regardless. He needs to affect the game outside of mid-range scoring more often than he is now to keep up with the demands of the new-NBA.

4) Demar has had poor playoff performances over the course of his entire career. No more to say here.

5) This one is a bit of a hypothetical, but if we get a new coach will Demar be willing to take a step back offensively and play more of a team role as opposed to being 'the man' offensively in order to get a more balanced approach. Demar's a good dude, so the answer is probably yes but it remains an unknown at this point. Sometimes it's hard to relinquish what you've already been given.

These are what came to mind when I was assessing his performance this season and the lingering effect Lowry leaving may have. With his salary it'll be very difficult to build around him without hitting a homerun in the draft. As such, if Lowry leaves, I strongly lean towards trading Demar. We all know Demar works really hard on his craft and has built himself into an all-star, but is there room left for substantive growth? If we assume Demar is close to a finished product, is this version of Demar good enough to build a team around? Thoughts?

EDIT - I added a poll as well out of curiosity

Despite his improvements, he remains an incredibly flawed one way player and probably always be. If the Raptors can't win with him as the 2nd best player (and they can't as we've seen the last two years), getting rid of Lowry and making him the #1 certainly isn't going to solve anything.

If Masai chooses to let Lowry go, keeping DeRozan around makes no sense either.

He has to develop a serviceable 3pt shot, he might have gotten away without it a decade ago, but not in today's league.
Pair that with willingness to pass like he did today and you have something going for you.
His defence is closely related to his lack of quickness and effort, I don't think that will change unfortunately.
He has elite driving ability, it's just he tends to underutilize it if he sees he doesn't get any calls.

He still has room, 27 is still not that old. Lebron took a while to develop a 3pt shot he has now, if Demar works for it, he'll get it too.

Given his work with Team USA and how different he looks there as opposed with us, I'd lean towards thinking he would blend in with whatever offense he's a part of.

The closest he has to an elite skill is working the pick and roll, but it's not as valuable when he can't make pocket passes and create for his big men down low. I hope that DeMar looks over what happened in this series and works hard on developing an ability to counter a trapping defense.

Maybe not the current version of DeMar, but if he can somehow develop a 3pt game, then I can see him continuing on here as a key piece on the team.

Not sure why he abandoned his post up offense. He'd be harder to guard if he mixed things up. PJ got him to play some D for the first time in his career.

lets trade him for pg13 already...allows us to start norm and simultaneously improves defense and offense
