Official Draft Thread / Pre-Draft Lottery & Workouts Poll

Post#1 » by JF5 » Thu May 11, 2017 10:35 pm

I'm not going to have Fultz, Ball, Jackson obviously as they're the consensus top 3-4... But guys who are realistically in range for the Magic.

*Mod Edit - Updated topic title and poll question (6th pick confirmed).

I picked Tatum.

Best fit imo combined with most likely to be there for our slot.

Wouldn't mind a point guard but there's an all-star caliber one on every other team. Could always address that need in other avenues (or just roll with Elf).

If Tatum is there, it's a no brainer IMHO.

Lauri Markkanen

A team in need of shooting and skilled front court play drafts...a 7 foot shooter.

Really hoping we dont end up with Fox. His lack of perimeter shooting will result in the Magic having another year of poor floor fooor spacing and a mediocre offensive rating.

Assuming Fultz and Ball are off the floor I think Monk would be a terrific pick. He can get his own shot and in my opinion is the most talented offensive player in the draft.

Monks critics often state his height as a weakness. This type of thinking can lead to mistakes. Think about how many players were considered "undersized"(Curry, Green, McCollum, Milsap, Thomas etc.) prior to their respective drafts. Especially with the way the NBA game is being called today height is no longer as importnant a variable in determining a players success.

it isnt just his height, its that and wingspan. Curry is not undersized for his position. Green and Millsap slightly undersized, but make up for it with 7'1" wingspans. CJ is 6'3 with a 6'6 wingspan, and still might be better at PG than SG, but they have Lillard at PG. Monk is 6'3 with 6'3 wingspan. his handles wont allow him to play PG. he is going to be more a Louis Williams type of player in my opinion. Combo guard for offense, and im not sure how well he will get his own shot off against NBA defenders.

Makes sense Tatum will win given that he is the highest ranked SF still available. I would be happy with that outcome.

Like the majority, Tatum is our #1 guy but if he is gone, I take Isaac and run.

I've watched almost every one of his games this year. IMHO Monk is a totally different player than Lou. Monk has elite athleticism and can play above the rim. His handles and passing are much better than he is given credit for. I really think Bradley Beal is a good comparison. I realize I'm in the minority but I believe he will end up being the third best player in the draft after Fultz and Ball

Beal is 6'5 with a 6'8 wingspan. Monk is much smaller. you have higher expectations on him that i do.

Why was I the only one who picked DSJ?

Pretty good article about him:
https://theringer.com/2017-nba-draft-dennis-smith-jr-nc-state-wolfpack-b220c78d9b5c
For as much as Smith has been criticized for not getting more out of his teammates, the NC State offense collapsed when he wasn’t in. Of the top four NCAA point guards in this year’s draft, Smith made the biggest impact on his team’s offensive rating (numbers courtesy of hooplens.com):

Image
Smith is a well-rounded offensive player. He can attack the rim, finish through contact, get to the free throw line, and knock down 3s off the dribble. He leads the elite point guards in this year’s draft in free throw rate, and trails only Fox when it comes to the percentage of shots he takes at the rim. The only one with a higher field goal percentage at the rim was Ball, and over half his shots were assisted, an indication of how well UCLA spaced the floor and moved the ball, and how many different threats the Bruins had on offense (numbers courtesy of hoop-math.com):

Very interested to hear your opinion on Markkanen. His weaknesses are obvious-length, athleticism, strength, rebounding, defense etc.

How good do you think he can be offensively?

Do you think he can play center next to Gordon at the 4?

Any comps?
