Hire Chauncey

In some type of front office/player development role. His pedigree and persona tells me he'll make a good GM some day. Give him his chance here. It won't come from SVG cuz he's too stubborn and narrow minded and only hires people from his past, but if Gores let's that stop him, then this team is destined to become the Orlando Pistons. No identity and no connection to past success other than in name and logo..

Connect with past identities by bringing in people who've thrived here in the past. Chauncey is a perfect fit for any role in a front office.

Side note: Starting to pick up on Mitchell. Love what I see. Can be a steal at 12. Bledsoe/Smart type. Chauncey would be perfect in helping the kid develop.

Didn't ESPN just hire Chauncey?

Don't think he's willing to take an assistant GM job and learn

The time to hire him in that role was when Joe was on his last legs...bring Billups in knowing that in 2 years Joe becomes a "consultant" who watches games at home while Chauncey takes the throne

Why? I know he wants a GM job, but that's not a good reason. If he hadn't played here, nobody would be giving him a second thought.

Yes, he's very impressive on television. I read somewhere he's a candidate for the Atlanta job.

He knows what it takes to win as a Piston. He understands the personalities of today's NBA and has good judgement on who belongs, who doesn't, who needs what/who around them to thrive, etc. He'd be perfect in a player development role.
It'll be too bad for us once some other owner takes a risk on him.

So, what guys did Chauncey help develop as a piston?

Does he have good judgement on who belongs? He wanted to hold onto his group well after it became obvious that the window had closed.

Does he understand the young guys? I haven't seen any indication of that. I'd describe him as more old school than a "players coach" type guy.

They were tight until Joe lied to him and traded him.

I agree. I love Chauncey, he's probably my favorite player ever. However, we just don't actually know if he'd make a good gm in this point in his career. I would hesitate to give him a position of power if he has little experience in a similar role. Not saying he won't be a gm because I think there are tons of jobs handed out in the NBA to inexperienced people, but if I were an owner I wouldn't do it. We'll see if the Hawks bite on him.

Guessing you forgot the part where Chauncey heaps praise on Terrell Brandon for being in his corner!

What part of his playing career would help him as a GM?

Really?

How about all of it?

He's been in so many different situations in so many different places!

I would hire him tomorrow as assistant GM or similar but the time for that has passed here.

Besides us I could see him getting hired in Denver or Minnesota due to connections in both places.

I would rather not hire Billups. He is a legend in Detroit and I want him to remain like that. Sometimes those coming-backs spoil a great story.

Really? He was the ringleader of the "flip the switch" mentality that brought the team down. Beyond that, if you think he'd be great at player development, name a player he helped develop. He was in the league forever, so it's probably a long list you have, right?

Since when is the GM hands on with player development? You hire assistant coaches for that

Chauncey's career took him through a lot of franchises in various stages of their development - so thats a plus

It's also well known he was great at developing and retaining relationships with other players

He is interviewing for Atlanta's GM job. They must think he can do it.

I'm still not upset with Bowers/SVG. We are still a heck of a lot better than when they got here. If RJ would have been healthy, I think we would have made an incremental improvement this past season, and we wouldn't even have a thread like this. No decision is perfect, they all have risks. I think Bowers/SVG have made good, even at times, great decisions. If we don't make the playoffs next year, I'll probably change my mind, but I'm pretty sure we will get back on track.

Think about Washington - they didn't make the playoffs the previous year but looked solid this year. I think we can do the same thing they did for sure.
